@MacDazzler you'd have to think that this means the Crusader will target Nic Shearer as their third halfback. Which is a huge shame as I imagine Folau Fakatava is off contract at the end of 2027, and the Landers would love to snap Shearer up then.

@handa457 There'd be surely a few other NZ Super sides after Shearer.
The Canes should be looking at him to backup Roigard as I think Shearer's better than both Enari and Viljoen.

Both Vijoen and Enari are off contract and not sure if the Canes will re-sign them. Shearer could be a good back-up to Roigard.

@Canes4life If I was JJ I'd be tempted to move Fakatava on after this season.
I really felt his resurgence for Hawkes Bay and All Blacks XV boded well for him. But he's gone so far backwards this season it's simply not worth losing an obvious talent in Shearer for another middling season of Fakatava.
Hell even if Fakatava doesn't exit. I'd carry four halfbacks just to keep Shearer. Lennox can over outside backs so it's essentially the same as carrying an extra winger.

Isaac Murray-Macgregor is the next talent from the Crusaders region heading to Wales and Scarlets. No npc contracts available for outside backs so he's off to Wales with ancestry too

@Fredsaua12 Is James Cameron still signed with Canterbury? If not, two Westlake boys who went down to Chch at the same time would no longer be there.

@Bovidae Yes he is with Canterbury for 2026 but expect him to head to North Harbour eventually.

New Zealand Origin Players Contracted Overseas in 2025.

The second column is of the number of players in the first column, who are no longer eligible for New Zealand.
The average Ferner would recognise the names of virtually all 500 players.

How are the second column players no longer eligible? Because they've played for a new national side?

Assume a lot of NZ born players representing Samoa or Tonga?

I don't think that is true at all - there's been players this year who have left who I didn't know anything about.
Also, the raw numbers don't really tell us that much other than what we already know, that there's a limited amount of contracts available in NZ so players go overseas for pro contracts.
For some examples:
The MLR players are often playing NPC and then travelling over for MLR, but they're not strictly lost to NZ.France and Eng have a lot of non eligible NZ players, but are they playing for PIs or for France/Eng?
How many of the 20 NZ eligible Oz players are genuine left NZ as pro rugby players as opposed to born in NZ and moved over young?
Japan seems to be where we lose most of genuine players. Maybe working on aligning our seasons with theirs would be a realistic goal?

I was surprised when I went thru the list that I recognised just about all the names.
Only a few that I didn't know.
I think you would recognise most of them.I just put exact numbers on something every ferner already knows/suspected.
And any ferner who didn't know, knows now. There is two different facets to the columns.
The first one is merely players who have originated from NZ.
The second is the number of those players who are not eligible (183) for NZ anymore.
When/if the others (311) come back to NZ, they'll be eligible for NZ again.Although the 183 are not all necessarily out of the picture.
Rassie selected Jean Kleyn in the winning 2023 RWC team, after he had played for Ireland in the 2019 RWC.Most of the players in Aus who are not NZ eligible anymore, came up thru the Aus system.
Quite a few of the others are just NZ ring-ins, to fill a gap.Japan and France is clearly where the money is.
You'd have admit NZR is doing an excellent job of preparing players for a career as a professional rugby player.
