Look, I'm not much of a racing person in general, not for horses, or the dishlickers. The dogs always look a bit sleazy to me.

But this seems to be a pretty extreme move to police a practice (it isn't a sport IMHO) which obviously has a raft of issues to deal with.

Obviously, animal welfare groups are thrilled, the racing industry is in uproar, particularly following the Baird government's moves on lockout laws etc.

Some are saying its a land grab by the Baird government for Wentworth Park dog track just outside the CBD.

Others are saying it'll chase gamblers from the dogs into the casino that Packer is building on the edge of the CBD.

In any case, I don't quite know what to make of it. I'm against anyone hurting animals in general, but what happens to all the hounds currently on the scene? Do they just get put down or what? Move to the ACT where its not currently banned? Interstate?

I'm very pro this decision. 10k dogs are being killed each year in NSW alone, for no good reason. I'm not an animal rights nut by any stretch, but I honestly can't condone an industry that relies that much on cruelty.

I love a bet on the dogs, but some of the stuff in the report is chilling, and the 7:30 report footage... very hard to watch.

It was only a matter of time before one of the of the jurisdictions stepped in and made the decision. The cruelty and disregard for any regulation has been going on for years.

Did you see some of the tweets? Claiming 1000 jobs could be lost, 6000 owners affected.

Its a shame that lowest common denominator has pissed all over the people who genuinely looked after their dogs, but unfortunately that's the way laws work: something fucks up badly or often enough, and you have to step in.

Good. This is an excellent outcome. Greyhound racing is a "sport" that relies on immense cruelty. I've been to the dogs once and it was awful. Filthy fat poorly dressed bogans everywhere. The members bar appeared to be a couple of eskies in a canteen staffed by toothless harridan. The catering looked to be a dead cat.

Apparently it's shit for the dogs too.

Hmmm. I'm a bit indifferent on this. I haven't had a chance to read about it but if the case is that 10,000 dogs die a year, so fucking what? Count how many dairy cows are culled each year due to performance issues.

Point taken Hooroo - doesn't make either one right, but yeah they're not about to ban dairy farming.

I guess when people hear "dog" they see "pet". Cows, less so.

Yeah I suppose the argument is the animals in farming serve a broader purpose for humanity - we consume them or their produce.

Greyhound racing is, more or less, for shits and giggles when you break it all down. The dogs are just disposable, and it's not like they bring any broad benefits to society like farm animals do.

Hmmm shouldn't they be given a chance to reform the sport rather than just banning it? Seems a bit extreme. Now what's going to happen to these dogs bred for racing? Thousands will be put down won't they?

They have been given the chance, Rancid. More than once. But the enquiry found that they continued to ignore the abuse present in the industry, and actively cover it up.

The big question is about the dogs, I agree. Hopefully they can do a big push for pet adoption, though I imagine a lot would be sold/moved to race in other states.

It just seems incredibly draconian to ban an entire industry when the majority aren't doing anything wrong.

They've had decades to clean up their act and as an industry they've colluded, obfuscated and turned a blind eye to issues they've known about for decades. Their hubris is demonstrated perfectly by the interview I was listening to on 666 ABC this morning with the CEO of Richmond Race Club who honestly thought they'd just get rapped over the knuckles in the report. Fuck 'em.

Interesting - my brother and family have had the opposite experience. I suppose there's a bit of work done in selecting the most suitable for rehoming... in this case the cats remained the boss of the house! :)
