    What a nail biter.
    Next Shield challenge will be v Canterbury on 28 September. Really hope Waikato win that game too, so they can hand the Shield back to the Bay on 8 October. #dreamsarefree πŸ™‚

    I swear the draw is always done to maximise the Cantabs chances of getting the Shield. However this game had gone (and it was the most likely challenge win) Canterbury would have likely had a crack yet other teams wait years for even one go.

    Rubbish. The last time Canterbury won the Shield was when they took it off Southland on 9 October 2010. They also lost it to Southland after 2 successful defences on 23 July 2011. After that, Canterbury had one (unsuccessful) challenge, when Taranaki held the Shield, on 18 September 2012.

    FYI @Chris-B, Ta$man had its last (unsuccessful) Shield challenge, also when Taranaki held it, on 1 September 2012.

    @Stargazer I know - well, not exactly - but, the first time in a hundred years we've had a "Nelson based" team capable of taking the Shield and we haven't been able to get a fucking challenge in four years! πŸ™‚

    @Stargazer Fair call however my point was regarding the draw. The fact that the Shield has successfully avoided Canterbury in the last few seasons has ben fortune rather than design.

    When I get a chance I will try and go back through the published draws to try and back this up.

    Small price you had to pay for beating the Magpies in the 2013 Championship final. πŸ˜† If you hadn't, you would have had your challenge against Counties on 30 August 2014 (the one the Bay won and was followed by several succesfull challenges until Waikato took it of us on 9 October 2015).

    @Mokey

    Saw most of the seconx gzlc and don't think Naki choked.

    Re the try that wasn't: correct call. Except Seta should have been yellowed. Saved the blushes if ghat idiot Waikato hooker. Pass it man!

    tough to say that against Hame - that guy is a farking animal and waikatos best player at the mo.

    watch the work he did leading up to the try just after half time...

    didn't think we'd win that one with the injuries we had.. but sheesh keeping the shield means so much to these guys, from about weds last week they wouldn't let it go out for any more 'public relations' work and they all had turns taking it home and spending time with it to make sure they really wanted to keep it.

    basically the injuries and naki's third game in a week cancelled each other out. They looked pretty rooted at half time. A lucky win, but we'll take it! Good atmos with the limited people there, think it's great how the shield really motivates the challengers supporters to jump on a bus or something to make a journey to the game. Some of them were going to be in for a long night last night getting home!

    @ploughboy Yep, Koloamatangi's decision not to pass was a shocker. Waikato had a huge overlap to the right.

    This was a strange game. We went along quite relaxed and were not too worried if Waikato lost, given the next challenger. But as the game went on we were all hoping Waikato would sneak a win. That's the second 20-20 Ranfurly Shield draw I've seen for Waikato - the other being with Counties in 1981.

    I haven't watched a replay but based on my view at the ground I wasn't impressed with O'Keefe's performance. It appears scrums aren't reset anymore when the front rows stand up. πŸ˜•
