Hard to believe it is Round One already, with injuries and everything, this is the 23 I expect:

    1. De Groot
    2. Vikena
    3. Ma’u
    4. Holland
    5. Dunshea
    6. Renton
    7. Lasaqa
    8. Broughton
    9. Fakatava
    10. Millar
    11. Tangitau
    12. Tavatavanawai
    13. Tele’a
    14. Manson
    15. Gilbert
    16. Bell
    17. Lienert-Brown
    18. Kautai
    19. Naeta
    20. Withy
    21. Hastie
    22. Robinson
    23. Te Hiwi

This fixture in recent times has been a close affair. 2023 the Tahs prevailed 21 - 20, last yr the landers scraped by 23 - 21

I actually real keen to watch this game. I want to see what the Clan are going to be like this year. As @Kiwiwomble points out, it's this time of year we hold out hope that they will be good. I a Canes man, but still like the look of the squad, although locks are a woory, with only a couple.

I think this will be as good a week as any to play the Waratahs. They'll only get stronger from here.

@Dan54 I'm keen to watch to see how the Tahs go. The comp could really use the Tahs being decent (but yes... both teams with new coaches should temper expectations for round 1)

Agree on the comp could use a good Tahs outfit. I think it important for the comp in Aus that both Tahs and Reds are strong, basically the stronghold of rugby in Aus?

A lot of optimism in Waratah land for this one. For those not following along, the Tahs have picked up a good deal of new talent from the Rebels - Andrew Kellaway, Taniela Tupou, Rob Leota, Isaac Kailea, Darby Lancaster among others. Add in Joseph Sua'alii and you've got a pretty handy side indeed.

However you'd think it all might take some time to gel, so I think the Highlanders are a real chance here.

@barbarian as @frugby said, yeah, this could be our best shot this year to role them

IMO that will definitely favour the Tahs approach.

Hearing chat around Suali’i starting in 15 this week. Interesting to see after the Wallabies introduced him to the international game as a 13.

Personally, I think he’s similar to a Folau where you can put him anywhere from 12 out and he will be just fine. I’m sure his name has been highlighted all week in Landers HQ. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I reckon the Joseph Sua'ali'i may impact selections. The potential of the cross field kicks could reduce the potential for Hurley to make the bench. We don't want a near 2M Sua'ali'i jumping for the ball against one of the smallest backs in the comp. Wouldn't have been surprised if they used Josh Whaanga and Kyan Rangitutia as a kick catcher at training as well. Get them jumping against the starting wingers and Gilbert as the closest players build wise to Suail'i. Him on a wet night may be quite scary.

Looks like conditions will be quite damp. So potentially a lot of kicking from Millar and Gilbert. One off running from the bash brothers in the midfield. Might be the sort of game where a 6 - 2 bench may be quite useful.

The Highlanders team is quite something. Clearly JJ much happier with the second half than the first…

I don't have the digital membership so can I guess that the Tongan fella Naeata will be in at 6? Reckon the infamous bench recruit Manson is starting but I think that's more obvious
