Final: Canterbury v Otago

That is a decent crowd, I love the fact that NPC is getting crowds like that even allowing for it a final.
With the population of Christchurch that is like the equivalent of getting about 65-70000 in a city like Brisbane etc.
Was something I kind of notice, the naysayers etc that post that the crowds are not great. Compare populations of most places and even normal round robin games you get decent crowds compared to population. Leaves super well behind. I actually pleased to hear yesterday, while talking to woman who was cutting my hair, (she enjoys rugby etc) and she was saying how much more she enjoys NPC than super , and for her it even more enjoyable than tests. It really is a great comp. -
A reminder this is an afternoon kickoff. 4pm local time.
Well done on the organisers for an afternoon game. No doubt will have contributed to the tickets sold and hopefully the decent forecast comes true.
I think both Super Rugby and NPC have been good comps this year - whilst it may not be sustainable it's nice that in the current situation both comps have been enjoyable.
I dont really understand this need to compare Super and NPC - they have different strengths and weaknesses.

@Dan54 Now look up the crowds Irish provincial teams get these days in an island of 7 million people.
I know the Irish etc get good crowds, not suggesting otherwise, and they are doing bloody well, with 4 teams in that 7 mill, where there average crowd is about 12-14000. Doesn't stop me appreciating our NPC (14 teams), what I suggesting is as a 3rd tier comp it a sight better than many make out.

Yep of course it does, would be same in all sport, especially as here in NZ (like most of world)we have become very used to staying at home and watching on tv. And next year it on FTA, which will be interesting I think, as quite a few that I know have cut sky as too expensive etc, and basically hang on for FTA highlights.
I must admit ,I also gauge a fair bit of how much interest there is in just generally what people are talking about etc, and even the number of (say here in the Naki) how many people I see wearing Naki jerseys compared to super etc around streets. And I notice kids wearing a hell of a lot. Actually after it's popuarity in 90s there seems to be even a lot less League jerseys in the streets theses days. -

I dont find that surprising given the Naki; a) changed Super rugby regions b) aren't a super rugby base and c) have players that tend to play all over as opposed to gravitate to one particular Super team.

i obviously would love to win but realistically just want a good competitive game, its been a really enjoyable season so would hate to see it end with a blow out or anything

Good to see old mate Dan highjack a thread about the final to talk about how much NPC is better than Super. Loves a hobbiehorse.
Great crowd for Otago on the weekend. Compared to Highlanders crowds, would have sat right down at the bottom for 2025 attendances. For the team that finished last.
Don't get me wrong, more than five times the attendance compared to games when people still thought Otago was shit though.

@Kiwiwomble Stacked as the kids say, will be a real arm wrestle of a final I suspect, Coltman or Hurley to have their name in the papers sunday morning

-
Massive shift required defensively required from TUJ and Timu up against McLeod and Ennor. That could be a big decider.
Think Millar's kicking game will have a big impact. He should have it over Knewstubb in that department. Same with Gilbert and Nareki.
Feel like they have a starting side and we have a better bench.
Should be a ripper. Forecast looks good.
-
i know on paper (the result this year, finishing 1 and 2 etc) things say this should be close...but it will always feel like david and goliath to me, we could have finished first and i would feel like a massive underdog

Yep will always remind people how good it is! Tell you what And don't care if you don't like it as much. Especially this week.
But on game, I pleased if weather is good on Saturday, as I suspect that will help Otago. Though I strongly suspect the Canterbury team just might have an advantage as they got players experienced in finals rugby,
