It's overall a bizarre mixture of selection, certainly in terms of risk. When you think of selection risk you tend to think of a young'un getting thrown in at the deep end for his attacking flair/pace/whatever, and that has a real potential upside. But what we have here is selection risk with no real upside. If that lack of cover on the bench actually works either through a backline replacement not being necessary or Pollock or Earl doing "a job" in the backs there is still nothing there that would suggest you would use this policy if you were playing France or NZ say in a World Cup knockout game. So what actually is the fucking point?
If he had to go for the 6-2 split, which I really don't think is necessary, except maybe v SA, then pick M Smith who at least covers two positions and allows some flexibility.

Although the Aussies have selection challenges of their own, so this experimentation may not matter.

They don’t have many options though. Two injured. JOC unavailable also. Stewart has played some 10. Also Gordon can cover at 10 in an emergency.
