Etzebeth was already steadily going down the lock pecking order.
    Probably had something to prove.
Turns out Bruno has major small dick energy.

    No ambiguity there

I like to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but after watching it again he deserves the red. Read somewhere that it was retaliation for it being done to him that lead to the fracas, but that is not the way to respond.
Yep, ban him. No place for that in the game.

@MN5 plenty of folk on SM pointing out other stuff (where a welsh hand was on his face but nowhere near the eye) as a way to try and justify it, and then the trolls with a pic of 4 RWCs...social media is a cesspit, but can be amusing.

What a brain explosion, that should be minimum of 12 weeks.

Imagine winning by 70+ points against a (previously) top tier nation and all anyone is talking about his what a fluffybunny your hero is.

    Sad day for Rugby?

    Impressive day for Rugby?

    A reality check.

Wales are way, way off. Only terrible All Blacks defence allowed them to paper over the massive cracks last week.

The Springboks are one of the very best teams of all time.

Wales are missing a few of their 1st XV. The have no depth. This week’s team would struggle to beat Tonga! They are a step down from last week, which made them cannon fodder for the Boks.

WRU should hang their heads in shame for arranging this fixture outside the official window. Heads need to roll.

It just seems like a massively pointless exercise.

Just indicative of how out of touch the WRU are, they knew full well what could happen but they didn't care. They could've arranged a game during the first week of November (when England played Australia and Ireland played NZ) against a lower ranked side but would rather make an extra few ££ by playing SA but throwing your players under the bus.
All four Welsh pro clubs are also playing this weekend, so the union has fucked them over too (again)

My Welsh friend was apoplectic on FB this morning with a rant expressing this and many other points about the WRU, so I assumed it was a bad result, but jesus, ouch.

Eben should be banned from all rugby for enough time to make it not worth giving him a contract.

Maybe the Welsh guy asked him to do it so he wouldn't have to look at it.

    @sparky

    Yes.
You sign away a lot of your rights when you run onto a rugby field, but not all of them.
The civil authorities can always step in if they are not satisfied with the self-regulation.
In this particular case, i'd say the deciding factor would be if he had a permanent eye injury, and what action the rugby authorities took.

Eben has always been prone to over the top reaction. Too bad, that he didn’t just punch the guy out. Dumb dumb dumb. The result will probably be that the instigator will get away scott free.
Tarnishes a great autumn season for the boks and makes a lot of people think the worst of the team. Sadly.people love to pile on, the team doesn’t deserve that.

I personally would be happy if Esteben was finished as a rugby player after this. Just stupidity of highest order, and I see nothing to gained from seeing him on rugby field again.

Worth noting that in .. something like 140 tests he has never had a red card. Not condoning his actions today, but he is not a dirty player. A moment of madness.

    world.rugby/organisation/governance/regulations/reg-17/appendix-1

    Intentional Contact with Eye(s) (7)

    Low-end:
    12 weeks/matches

    Mid-range:
    18 weeks/matches

    Top-end:
    24+ weeks/matches

    Max:
    208 weeks/matches

So where does this fit? Mid range?

I would inclined to go low end. The other player was not injured and watching the video he (Etsebeth) appears to move his thumb away after he realizes it’s in his eye.

@Duluth Definitely much worse than the one Chris Aston was given a ten week ban for 2016.

    https://www.the42.ie/chris-ashton-suspension-eye-gouging-ulster-2558107-Jan2016/

I would have thought it will be a ban of 3-6 months at least.

Planet Rugby seems to think it will be a six week ban which would be a very light slap across the wrist for a reckless act with obvious aggressive intent in a game that was no longer a meaningful contest.

"Etzebeth is likely to get a full migration in his sanction, meaning that unless the disciplinary panel deems the entry point for his ban to be a top-end and adds additional weeks on the guideline 12, at most a six-match ban is heading his way."

Only mitigations for me are that it is Etzebeth's first red card and the Springboks have apologised unreservedly for the incident.

Obviously the whole evidence will be presented at the hearing but I'd have thought a 16-18 week ban is fair.

This match was part of a two match deal with SA which was brokered pre-Covid

Yes, it was a a beating.

Yes, we’re really poor at the moment.

But like all things sport there’s a lot of recency bias in the aftermath of this drubbing.

A far better Welsh team than the one which played yesterday had an even bigger hiding in Pretoria in 1998

June 1999 - almost exact one year to the day - Wales recorded their first ever win over SA

    Perhaps lightning will strike twice

And Rassie played in both matches

I'm no lawyer, but the 'justification' of retaliating to an earlier offense isn't the smartest.

That would make the retaliation premeditated and deliberate.

    And worthy of greater censure.

When you look at this video, it seems amazing that it was Etzebeth's first red card.
