I think Barrett's clearing kicks are very good actually. Can he kick as far as Carter? Impossible to tell. I would wager that on average there would be barely a few metres in it.

@hydro11 yeah he made a couple of beauts from inside his 22 that ended up well into the opposition half.

On BB, one of the problems he had before 2016 was that he stood too deep. The AB coaches prefer their 1st 5s to stand flatter, which increases your options at the advantage line. And with his acceleration he is deadly. Both the Canes and ABs benefitted from this last year, and will do so again this season.

The no try to Laumape... Would be nice if they took the whole situation into consideration. JB kicks and immediately goes in front of Laumape, putting him back onside.

Yeah I was wondering about that? What is the exact rule? I'm pretty sure JB was in front of Laumape when he caught it.

Pretty sure if you are offside like that you have to move back (i.e. Make an effort to basically turn around and get back behind the kicker). You can't just get magically put back onside by a faster player.

It's related to the 10 meter offside law I think.

If a guy kicks the ball behind you but runs past, doesn't that then put you onside? Not sure if that applies here though.

                No.

Law 11.1 &11.4 offside in general play and possibly offside and 10 meters.

Relevant part is can't move towards the ball.

                  @Rancid-Schnitzel

I'm your situation, you would only get put onside if you stopped when they kicked it and didn't move towards the ball until they put you onside.

That's why Laumape is penalized, he didn't magically stop and continued to move towards (and play) the ball.

                      Watched full game.

Canes absolutely monstered in the physical aspects, particularly Ardie. Stormers were hunting in packs though. Really muscled up. That was seriously impressive.

Can't believe that cross kick worked about 18 times. BB was on autopilot most of the game.

Disappointed despite the win. Too many basic mistakes and that try when 14 vs 15 was weak as. A more clinical Stormers side would have won that.

As mentioned, this goal kicking thing needs to be sorted out. Unless there's some cunning plan to select DMac, BB needs the practice.

Think the crusaders had a try disallowed last season when a kick was put through, Matt Tood was on the opposite side of the field to the kicker and ball but continued moving forward in front of the kicker despite having zero influence on anything

Yes, as long as you don't progress down the field until you're put onside.

Looks to me like he goes in front within the next couple of paces. Laumape was slowing down so you could argue he was stopping advancing...JB isn't exactly lightening.

the rule is, if you are in front when it is kicked, you either stand still or move back, slowing to allow the guy in front isnt going to put you onside, unfortunately in that situation, Laumape is always offside, and if he stops then starts he doesnt catch the ball, so being in front has a big impact on the play.

@taniwharugby no, the law is you don't move towards the opposition or where the ball is going to land or you risk sanction. JB goes in front almost immediately after kicking the ball...

It's like BB has decided passing is passe, he wants to kick for tries this season haha. His skill executing it, and awareness of when to take the option, are outstanding.

Laumape is used to RL where you never have to be behind the kicker. 😀

Jordie could have probably regained the ball himself.
