Pushing Tin - Paekakboyz Training Log

Mean day of activity. Gym session this morning. Tried front squats for the first time - pretty cool but I need to get used to the bar placement. Right on your throat is a bit uncomfortable!! Did some work on calves and hammies. Finished up with some barbell curls. Then the real work started! Trailer load of mulch shifted to the backyard then another load of pea metal. 20-30 wheelbarrow loads later I had a nice wee burn in the legs! great to have some awesome weather to work in.

Hopeful I'll be ok for a run tomorrow - although the test cricket is more likely to stop me than tired legs. -
An up and down session today. Couldn't be arsed initially but I got to the gym and got stuck in anyway. Squats are coming along nicely - accidentally did 7 at my max rate when I normally do 5-6! was stoked that I didn't wipe out, might have even had another rep in me. The downside of working out alone is missing a spotter - I'd probably be a bit more aggressive about how fast I try and increase weight. Far easier if there is someone to catch the bar for you!

My mistake was doing to much work on my shoulders before bench press. I realised after my workout I've been loading shoulder exercises before I get to bench. lol that's a bit of a fail, pretty sure the last time I did bench first I was sweet at my current weight.

Back and triceps took a beating. Arms were so sore I could barely carry my bag home! -
and will likely be finished by tomorrow!! what a horrid first session! I actually feel sorry for our guys, they just aren't up to it. Talented bunch but something crucial seems to be missing.
-
Tough legs session this morning. Back squats, front squats, leg press, hamstring curls and hamstring deadlifts (not full range of motion). Legs were right wobbly!
-
Super short session last night - right bicep has been sore, one of those odd ones where is just hurts a bit but you've still got full functionality. Maybe a strain? who knows.

Anywho I managed a few DL sets and bench last night. I'm really pleased with how my DLs are coming along. Can smack out a few at 120/140 and still have enough in the tank to go for single reps at 160. Grip strength has improved out of sight and straps work well to keep the bar from twisting at those heavier weights.

Bench was ok - I'd managed to complete 3 sets at 105 then I had a week or so where I could knock off the first set but needed a spotter for the 2nd/3rd sets. Kind of annoying as I was already eyeing 110. Then again we are well into the silly season and kai/sleep etc haven't been as good as they could. -
Front squats, back squats, short DL's for hammies, leg press and hamstring curls. Legs, legs, legs!! A bit wobbly afterwards on the stairs! Last sat morning session for the year. Hoping to hit the gym as often as possible this week. Away over Xmas/NYs so there will be plenty of beer and kai to work off once I get home.

Just back from holiday up north - fantastic weather...not!! rain and heat = conditions I'd rather avoid!

Back at the gym in the next day or two - keen for a run as well. Puku is certainly showing the signs of a protracted festive season! -
I have fallen in love with leg press. For the first time ever, it is a challenge. Why, 'the pause'. At the bottom of each rep, you rest the weight on the pins (or in our case, the 6x4 we place across the bottom safety stops), and take the tension right off the muscles, Push up, and then back down, and that is one rep, as opposed to down and then up. Destroys your quads and in particular your sartorius (sp?).

interesting though, the WHY it is so much harder starting from the dead stop each time. thoughts anyone? -

Similar to a chin/pull up in that if you hang for a second or two it is harder rather than keeping tension on by not extending ? -
lol! I think the fern is on a post holiday go slow as well!

First session back since holidays. Pleased to see I only added approx 1kg over the break. Vast amounts of beer are likely to get the blame for that!!

Legs feel knackered already. I know my hammies will be screaming come tomorrow. But things are underway again with the training.

Set up for Fri and Sun sessions now. Another goal is trying to sneak a run in between em! -
fark - first DL session for ages. Knackered!! Rest of the workout was ok. Definitely lost my edge from last year but a bit of hard work should sort that out!
-
Solid workout last night. Squats, core, shoulders and bench. Legs and chest don't feel too bad today, it's nice to get that "I haven't been to the gym for ages" soreness out of the way!!
-
DLs, bench, triceps and biceps today. Was warming up on light DL's and had a bit of pain at the top of the right buttock (as Forrest would say). Thought I was warmed up ok but that set me back. I was going to push through and up weight etc but decided to go easy. Only had 2 DL sessions since starting back up after the hols so taking it easy.

Bench was much better - back up to 3 full sets at 100 so I won't be far off increasing back to 105. Did 3 sets of dips and similar for curls - both till failure. Will be doing some building with the neighbour in 15-20min or so too - I love daylight savings!! Gym again on Friday or sat morning. Next week is a bit more settled work-wise so 2-3 gym sessions lined up. -
Had an enforced break from the gym recently - been building a retaining wall and fence with the neighbour during all available daylight! Have to say all the gym work has paid off - a bit of soreness but digging, lifting, etc has been sweet as. Itching to get back to the gym asap. I'm away for 2 weeks in March so the start of this year has been terrible for my workout routine.

On a related note my eating habits are improving out of sight. Have adopted oats for breakfast - either soaked in water/milk or mixed raw with yoghurt/fruit. It's habit now and easy to manage. The wife and I have been eating better for lunch and dinner as well. Taking a bit more time to prepare lunch when you are cooking dinner isn't a big deal and helps avoid eating crap! plus it saves $$ too.

Can't wait to have both gym and eating cranking at the same time.
