Just build up again. There's a world of difference between battling through discomfort and pain. Good athletes also listen to their body so if its not responding, stop and assess. It's not like a training run is a race.

First real mental setback today. Set out for a 14 km run. Battled from about 7, and then completely broke down at 10k. Ankle, knee and groin all flared up, and I just didn't have any energy in my legs.

So, for what I think is the first time in my life, I quit. Switched off the watch and just walked home, broken.

Confidence has taken a massive hit.

Triple threat by the sounds of it. Running really can be murder on the legs. Maybe just cut it out and focus more on the swimming for a bit? You'll still get the aerobic fitness you need. Sounds like your lower half needs a bit of r and r.

Much better. Comfortable, pain-free 8.5km at a consistent 5.30-5.40 pace. Felt good at the end of it.

Recovery time for heart rate is really quick, lungs barely blowing today.

    Fucking hot and stuffy though.

Can now write Saturday off as a very bad day at the office.

@SammyC what the fuck do you think about when you are swimming those big distances? I get bored, and think about some random shit.

If Iโ€™m in the pool or in a race I constantly think about going faster than the person next to me.
Or if thereโ€™s some hot girls in the pool, I try to sneak a look when I can ๐Ÿ™‚

If Iโ€™m swimming alone, then generally nothing. I suppose itโ€™s a bit like meditation, get a rhythm with your breathing and just zone out. I do the same when running long distances.

Iโ€™m actually ramping up the swimming again... most lunchtimes I swim with a group of local businessman for 2km or so. And have been backing that up 3 nights a week with a masters squad (last nights set was 4km). Iโ€™d still love to swim cook strait one day.

@SammyC you're a machine. I can't fathom that number of kms. I guess mainly because i don't really enjoy it.

At least when i run i have music playing.

I tried to run with music but I ended up running slowly or stopping because I was too into the music.

Probably something to do with the male brain and muiltitasking ๐Ÿ™‚

@Paekakboyz in the pool? or the lake?

to be honest, it's a little unnerving doing any ocean swim here, what with the crocs and the tiger sharks and the complete lack of visibility.

@mariner4life in the bath even! Jaws got me fucking good!

What about thinking bout form etc? Are your strokes (giggity) as efficient as they could be? I guess that would get old for an endurance swim. Audio book? ๐Ÿ˜

Genuine question. Do they actually have underwater type walkman things? Would be easy enough to insert under a swimming cap.

Really? Might be worth taking a look. Distraction is nice but won't help the aching shoulders.

What's on the playlist? Actually I think that was a separate thread here years ago.

Caps are for girls to keep the hair out of their eyes.

Get absolutely fucked. The organisers dropped the max temps for wet suits by 2 degrees. Which pretty much runs out wetsuit for Sunday.

    I can't swim 1500m in a lake without a wetsuit. I'll sink.
