Yaaaaay - IWL finally gets a start.

BEAUDEN BARRETT TO LEAD HURRICANES AGAINST REBELS
    Thu 2nd May

Beauden Barrett will captain the Hurricanes for a second time this season against the Rebels at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

With Dane Coles unavailable and TJ Perenara on the second of his All Black rest weeks, Barrett will lead the side in the round 12 Investec Super Rugby match which kicks off at the family friendly time of 5.15pm.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has made three changes from the starting XV from last week's impressive 47-19 win over the Chiefs.

With Perenara out, Richard Judd makes his second start of the season while Jeff To'omaga-Allen comes in at tighthead prop after Ben May has been ruled out with a minor injury.

There is a first start for lock Isaia Walker-Leawere in what will be his 10th appearance for the Hurricanes since he made his debut against the Brumbies last season.

Plumtree has also made several changes to the bench after opting to go with a six-two forward-backs split.

The experienced Toby Smith returns after several weeks out with a high ankle sprain while Alex Fidow comes in to the match-day squad.

Young flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi also returns along with halfback Finlay Christie.

Plumtree stressed the importance of the match against the Australian conference leaders.

"We have really targeted the five matches between our two byes which we believe will be vital to where we finish the regular season on the table," he said.

"We obviously started the block of games well against the Chiefs and we really want to carry on with the momentum we got from that against a Rebels side we expect to really challenge us."

Our valued members and ticket holders heading to the round 12 Investec Super Rugby match can jump on a Metlink train for transport to the Wellington Railway Station.

All fans have to do is show their physical match ticket or membership pass, sit back and enjoy the free ride into town.

Kick-off at Westpac Stadium on Saturday is 5.15pm.

The Hurricanes squad to face the Rebels is:

    15 Jordie Barrett
    14 Wes Goosen
    13 Matt Proctor
    12 Ngani Laumape
    11 Chase Tiatia
    10 Beauden Barrett (c)
    9 Richard Judd
    8 Reed Prinsep
    7 Ardie Savea
    6 Vaea Fifita
    5 Isaia Walker-Leawere
    4 James Blackwell
    3 Jeff To'omaga-Allen
    2 Asafo Aumua
    1 Fraser Armstrong

    Reserves

    16 Ricky Riccitelli
    17 Toby Smith
    18 Alex Fidow
    19 Kane Le'aupepe
    20 Liam Mitchell
    21 Du'Plessis Kirifi
    22 Finlay Christie
    23 James Marshall

@Canes4life IWL is the closest thing to a Magpie in this ducking team.

Edit: now Apple is censoring me (maybe that hysterical dude in the other thread was right about free speech ruining sport) - fucking not ducking!

@Nepia lol, Gareth Evans will be back soon enough. Out of pure interest what Hawkes Bay players should be in there?

Is it 100% set in stone that IWL is leaving Welly or was that a yarn?

@Stargazer he should be thankful he even has a contract after the amount of times he's been injured.

@Canes4life What a bs comment. Injuries are work-related accidents like any other. If he should be thankful for his contract, so should every other player.

@Stargazer the Canes could have lost all faith in Cridge after ongoing injury struggles but gave him another chance so yes he should be grateful. Maybe he is still struggling, hence the reason why he hasn't been selected.

@Canes4life He played 80 minutes for the Hunters in Tokyo and played clubrugby last weekend. Fitness shouldn't be an issue. I hope he gets some time off the bench soon.

@Stargazer yeah but maybe they are taking time with him considering previous history. I'm sure he will get a chance. Plus didn't we get taken to the cleaners in Tokyo - maybe he just isn't up to it.

I am glad the Canes are atleast matching that smaller, mobile lock with a bigger lock and until those guys lose form I'm afraid Cridge probably won't get too much gametime.

Well, Marino Mikaele-Tu'u over Prinsleep for one. Fakatava over any of the reserve half backs. As @Stargazer notes it would be nice if the tokens in the squad (Cridge, Lowe) actually got some gametime some time.

@Nepia agree on Prinsep, he is overated - atleast the future is Devan Flanders so you can be happy about that. Fakatava was a big loss, but when it's a personal reason for him to leave and go and learn from Aaron Smith then I guess the Canes can't do much about it.

Meh Lowe just doesn't really do much for me. I'm still waiting on Umaga Jensen to get a run but that hasn't eventuated yet either so I guess it's hard when there is plenty of talent in the team.

Guys like Flanders, Farrell, Keruru-Symes, McClutchie, Toala, Teddy are the future so atleast there are plenty of players for HB fans to get excited about. Now it's up to the Canes to sign them.

@Stargazer @Nepia On Teddy, I haven't seen much of him but I understand he is a really good scrummager. There was also talk of him maybe moving away from prop and focusing on Hooker... can anyone elaborate? I hope he stays as a prop.

@Canes4life So far in club rugby, he has played both prop and hooker. In the Magpies WTG list, he is listed as a prop.

He's from Napier Boys so until he pulls on the white and black hoops he's the equivalent of a Cantabrian to me. 😉

@Nepia I'm sure he's already worn the black and white in age grade rep rugby.
