I for one am disappointed. SA vs FRA is more appetising than Wales. I haven’t sent anything from Wales this RWC to suggest they’ll beat SA.

Hopefully their coach telling the world he thought they were shit last night fires them up .

Okay so now we have the French out of the rwc on a forward pass and Mark Keohane saying Barnes was awful in the 2007 quarterfinal? What next Phil Kearns admitting he’s been a complete cock about the 2011 final?

I would have liked to see SA v ENG. Reckon that would be a hard battle of similar styles.

I think he just didn’t want to award the penalty that would have all but lost it for them. Interestingly enough though, he was happy to give the try that lost it for them....

Difference between not having to make a decision and having to make a decision.

That's knockout refereeing. We all know this by now, surely.

Score your points early. If you have to play catchup, you will need to do it via tries and dropgoals. Can't expect (many) kickable penalties in the second half.

Very true. I was just a bit shocked that something pretty clearly a penalty 99% of the time, in 99% of games, is suddenly unplayable.

We’re it reffed that way all the time, I’d have no problem, but all weekend the refs were swallowing their whistles.

It’s also very hard to explain to the visiting crowd (some of which I watched both games yesterday), which isn’t a great ad for the game.

I was also astounded that the try wasn’t pulled back - it seemed very clear from the first angle the place on the field where it left the hands was behind that of the place where the call was caught. It wasn’t like he was passing it out the back of the hands either, it was completely static.

Although I think France were their own worst enemy, I’d be fuming if both of those calls had gone against the ABs.

@gt12 you don't see many rucks called unplayable any more. It either comes out veeerrry slowly, or the defending team gets penalised.

Also saw one in the SAF v Japan quarter.

Mafi got trapped on wrong side between Faf's legs. Saf deliberatley milking it but Barnes let play-on as long as Mafi was perfectly still, then Japan counter rucked and Faf tripped over the player that shouldn't be there but Barnes called truce as he knew they were gaming it to begin with. Barnes called too many bodies on the ground. Scrum.

    So wrong, but so right.

    Very knockout refereeing.

The difference with that one is that SA were looking for a PK and the ball was available (albeit slow). This one the ball did not come out at all, which was directly attributable to the tackler getting in the road.

To win a world cup, or even get to the final, you usually need to scrape by ugly in at least one game.

No shame for Wales in progressing in a game that they were second best in, and is not overly relevant for guessing their performance level for the following week.

Not sure that helps Piper get a gig for the main dance this week.

Guy on the far right looks like he has just turtle-necked his pants..

At least the 4th World Cup in a row with a controversial quarterfinal

    2007 - obvious
2011 - Bryce Lawrence in the Boks/Wallabies quarter (Bryce couldn't referee in South Africa after that I believe?)
    2015 - Craig Joubert and Wallabies/Scotland finale
    2019 - Wales/France.

Barnes just did what always does. Refs it as he feels it.

    Has it’s pluses and minuses.

Check out the video under 'red card' (Fekitoa on Ireland), and then explain why Wales didn't cop one as well?

Wales went down to 14 men against France in the 2011 SF but could have, and should have, won.

They played dumb rugby and lost.

If Wales win this they won’t win the SF
    Not on this performance

This performance won’t matter one iota if they win.

You’ve just gotta get there and start again.

Wales have very little chance of beating the Boks they can’t handle pressure and won’t handle the Boks up front one sided game coming

I guess Peyper won't referee a game in France in a near future after this shot. He would be "persona non grata".
