My understanding is that its not a meal replacement, more of a snack replacement. Theoretically we should be having 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day (for most of us not realistic), but protein shakes give us a low fat way of having the extra two meals. I believe the snacks/light meals are important to keep your metabolism going.

Aside from that protein helps muscle repair.

I think it's a good question, and would also appreciate insight from someone more knowledgable.

Depends what you're taking virgil - some are designed purely as full- or part-meal replacements and loaded with vitamins. Some are just for protein or in the case of serious bodybuilding stuff: Loaded with carbs AND protein. Taking those sorts of bodybuilder products requires you to actually burn it off or you'll be stacking carbs into your body and probably turning it into fat.

The one I use is basically 70% protein in the form of amino acids with a bit left over for vitamins and a small amount of fat + carbs. I use high protein and low fat/carbs because I'm not doing a lot of weights. Protein helps you with hunger cravings and stuff.

Typically I'll go for a 20-25km bike ride, or do my latest core workout, then have one scoop (31g including 23g protein) in a glass of 500mL water. The protein is good for muscle development/repair and stops me eating crap after exercise - which is the food avoidance I'm looking for <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> The fluid is required to replace sweat and I usually follow the shake up with another 500mL immediately, then one before bed.
No it doesn't - in fact I've just switched over to using water and the taste is almost as good.

no, i mean can you get protein from skimmed milk?

dumb question probably, but i'd assumed that they 'skim' the fat, not the protein?!

i dont use protein shakes and dont need to gain mass (i'm 6' 5" and 18 stone!) but would like to maintain muscle in my old age

Yes Catt - there is protein in skim milk. Here in Oz some companies even produce specific low-fat milks with added protein.

Best way is to check the product labelling - there isn't much difference in terms of % of protein per litre.

Most protein powders I've come across recommend you use skim milk.

The protein I use is pretty close to 100% whey. Its got no carbs at all.

The shakes with protien and carbs are meal replacements. I have no problems eating at the moment so I dont see the point.

I generally have one with breakfast, one in the afternoon, one after the gym with a teaspoon of glutamine see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine then one before I go to bed (although if i go to gym late I wont have the one before bed)

In a related question, does anyone know of any whey powders that aren't flavoured? I can't stand the chemical strawberry/chocolate/vanilla shit much longer. :nta 😕
