Would’ve been interesting to see who made it if all locks were available. I assume S. Barrett would’ve made it with Whitelock and Tuipulotu.

Does Strange, Vaa’i or P3 get the 4th spot?

In one of Plumtree's interviews he was asked about Strange's selection and his response was underwhelming (generic fluff followed by a comment about the good coaches he's already played under)

I'd guess one of the other two players would make it

I assume he was upset that Fozzie overruled him opting for Strange over Blackwell.

@Kiwiwomble As I said I rate him, but he needs to put on a few kegs to his lean frame to make himself a more effective ball-carrier.

I'm in the middle, I think his game has come on to the point where he's got the goods, but there's still room to bulk up and become an absolute monster. He carries deceptively well, lumbers through tackles with his long legs where it seems he shouldn't as he's way too upright, same when he hits front on in defence. Him and Selby-Rickett have a similar style imo.

Strange was a massive surprise to me. But we are talking potentially about 5th and 6th options so they were pushing it up hill a bit.

DMac watch. Only bothered with anything decently noticeable or that added/subtracted from his game.

    4:05 - kicked a conversion.
8:45 - gets into good position to defend Jordan on chip through from Mounga.
10:05 - spills a high kick in traffic but it was going back for a penalty anyway.
12:23 - gets ball off BB with slight overlap and kicks, looks like a waste but then bounces awkwardly back to Aumua who turns over.
16:20 - gets pass in 22 from under pressure BB and runs around Dunshea then frees Aumua...who kicks...luckily JB puts it out on the full from the resulting possession.
17:20 - Try! Catch & pass to put Clarke away then backs up to get it back off TJP. Put it down one handed and also stared meanly at someone.
34:37 Catch & Pass to put Reece away on the right after an ALB offload.

So a pretty handy first half, just that kick which irked me and could probably have been used better.

40:25 - Savea turnover in the oppo 22, DMac gets it at first receiver running diagonally at Faingaanuku, who has 2 defenders outside him, DMac has 4 attackers. Holds onto it and gets chopped by Goodhue, pops the ball to Sotutu who carries it 5 and then penalty. Try gone begging.
44:15 - Counter attack in NI 22, catch and pass to Reece in space who runs then clears.
45:45 - Try Smith! Gets ball at 2nd receiver running on angle and skips to Sotutu who busts and offloads back to him to swing it into Smith.
52:19 - well positioned on short side D to shutdown outside break for Bridge, then gets in Webers way on the penalty quick tap that followed.
52:42 Barrett cleans up loose ball and DMac is at first receiver with bugger all options from the breakdown, grubbers and Clarke regathers.
57:30 Savea turnover, gets ball at 1st receiver on 40m, Roane cuts in towards what looks like an opening hole on 45m and DMac dummies, all the while running on diagonal, ALB has to straighten then DMac throws pass outside him as he gets tackled and has to watch everyone except Clarke and Jordan stop.
61:07 Switches side at breakdown 30m out to help lessen danger on short side break - doesn't do a heck of a lot except wave but most likely helped.
65:49 at first received and pops a good ball to Clarke straightening into a big hole.
66:01 Try Roane! At first receiver, catch & pass to Roane who puts the after burners on.
72:15 Puts up a mahoosive defensive bomb and nobody chases.
73:06 gets tap back from Dixon and throws good wide pass to PUJ, who taps to Hunt who releases Roane and ALB for a good break.

So that's about it, exciting eh!

Look, he wasn't utter shit, but if you want to say he's creating things like Roane's try, you have to accept he's costing tries when he gets chopped or turns it over running on the diagonal. Trying to apportion the same sort of blame or more to a guy playing his first game at this level is all kinds of absurd - a try had just gone begging and he was trying to keep the ball alive as he must have thought it was still on. He hasn't played umpteen number of tests. That's a 14 pointer, plus the 7 pointer from just after halftime.

All in all, I'm left wondering....why the funk is he not a goal-kicking halfback that can cover 10? All his best work was done in linking from halfback type scenarios. He'd be electric. When he's given too much time and space is when we see the dross.

Oh yeah - on the rewatch, ALB appeared to be much better than he is being given credit for and there were some very promising signs from the ALB/RI combo...something to bear in mind if we end up actually getting a team named.

Annnnd...Sotutu what can't he do was also even more impressive on second viewing.

    Sent Whitelock and Taylor flying.

Would’ve been interesting to see who made it if all locks were available. I assume S. Barrett would’ve made it with Whitelock and Tuipulotu.

Does Strange, Vaa’i or P3 get the 4th spot?

I reckon Josh Dickson might have been in the frame, as well. He was playing some impressive footy before getting injured.

If I'm right, then with everyone available, the pecking order might have looked something like:

    Retallick
    Whitelock
    Barrett
    Tuipolotou
    Dickson
    Parkinson
    Strange
    Vaaí

...though actually, it wouldn't surprise me if Strange was ahead of PPP at this stage, though not in long term potential.

Once you get down to choosing the 7th best lock in the country, the margins between the contenders are probably pretty thin.

In that radio interview I don't remember Fox mentioning Dickson amongst the injured locks. Maybe it just slipped his mind but Strange and Parkinson were named.
