    @NTA fark!

Yeah it sucks. Can't work out if it was the exercise or something else.

I think, rather than backing off at this point, I need to start keeping notes on what I eat, how I slept, and the exercise I'm doing in order to try and boil it down to key factors.

When I was fit back in my 30s, the migraines went away. I thought they were linked to the heart surgery, but that hope has been quashed.

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I'm back.

Let's see: started going back to the gym during COVID and using my fancy watch to record stuff. Mainly my HR so I could see how close I was to collapse.

Mostly getting a few things back in order and setting goal weights on squats, deadlifts, farmer's carry, bench press, and chinup/pullup/neutral-grip-up. The idea being I'm on 92 caps for the club, and after breaking my stupid old arse in First Grade for 1 game last year after heart surgery in Feb, thought it best to at least get some muscle tone back with a bit of bulk.

There has been a little bit of road work in there but kept finding excuses to avoid it, which I really shouldn't as I'm sitting around 105kg at the moment. Little bit of migraine and a little bit of plantar fasciitis/bruised heel will curtail that...

Rugby preseason has commenced, and I've been getting into the aerobic stuff there. My last bronco is 7:33 which is the time to beat at the end of preseason. Ran that in 38C heat on Monday, so anything after that should be a doddle 😐

Last night we did a fitness session in a trio - me with a couple of guys 10 years younger. It was a fun group exercise in that it sucked. From one in-goal:

    • Player A runs to the opposite tryline and back
    • While that happens, Player B is doing the exercise - pushups, situps, or squats
    • Player C is in rest
    • Now player B runs, Player C does reps, Player A rests

    And so on...

Each group has to get to 150 reps of each exercise collectively. So reckoning on about 30-40 reps per run (diminishing) you end up covering a fair bit of shit. I ended up doing my own thing for a bit while the young fellas did contact, because fuck that when you feel like you're about to vomit.

After that I wandered over to help the women's 7s team train. They've got a couple of rookies this year learning the game and I'm not so fast I can catch them easily.

Average HR was 159bpm over half an hour, peaking 180.

Just looked back at the June - Dec 2020 record:

77 sessions (mix of walk, weight, jog, a couple of indoor rowing, and a hike)
    222km covered
    42 hours activity logged

Jan '21 so far is 5 hours of activity over 10 sessions worth 14km.

Gym this morning just doing my regular chinups, squats, bench, cable rows and a couple of others around shoulder strength. Tried deadlifts with the straight bar - I typically use the trap bar - and had a tingling sensation down the outside of my glutes and thighs when I engaged. Weird, so I stopped that.

Rugby preseason again tonight - Mondays = fitness training.

Another Bronco in 8 minutes which was after we had done a bit of warm up so I wasn't as fresh - top two inches need to be better quite frankly in terms of willpower to keep pushing through the burn once I'm into aerobic saturation.

Some wicked exercises including bear crawl pushing a tackle bag the length of the field in teams of 2. As the senior of the pair I did less of course 🤣

Tightened up on the eating today as I've been fairly lazy with it the last week. Might need to start 3km runs again to help the burn and increase the sprint type fitness for Rugby. Longer runs achieve fuck all for old props like me.

Tuesday was recovery. Slept quite well Monday and Tuesday nights, bar getting up to piss like the old man I am 😉

Tonight I was going to get in half an hour at rugby training BUT with the kids back at school and extracurricular activities, the evening is fucked up with both kids doing extracurricular activities right around dinner time and Mrs TA deciding I had to prep chicken schnitzel from scratch for the meal. By the time everything was cooked and consumed it was nearly 7:30 and Miss TA needs picking up at 8 😐 Rush to rugby. Crack out a lap and some shuttles, handle some committee shit, and I'm done.

    FFS...

3km run this morning in a tick over 18 minutes.

    Two hours later, migraine. 🤔

    Fuck.

Decided to start a diary of the events leading up to the migraine and what happens thereafter. Might lead to some knowledge about how to combat it in future

First had them when I was a funt in my 20s. Mostly stress related, but when I was a fit 30-something in the 90kg range, I didn't have a single one, no matter how fast or far I ran.

Might just be a case of accepting I can't run faster than 6:30/km any more 🤷‍♂️

Ran a Bronco last night in 7:29 - new PB and just under the target time I wanted. I should have trained with the boys as well, but was too busy doing committee things.

@NTA one of the good things about a Bronco is you can practice on your own, but ideally you want to run it with someone who can put a 30 sec or so on you, not so fast they kick your arse, but just enough to keep pushing you that little bit by setting a pace.

Rather humiliating when you do one against a team of 13/14 year olds and a few of them kick your arse by over a minute!

Or someone you know you can keep ahead of - if you're just beating them on rep 2 at the 20 meter mark, then sure as hell you want to push further ahead at the 20m mark on rep 3.

Rugby training Wednesday night was pretty good. After some 100m sprints, where I pushed myself to keep up with some of the young backs (who went out too hard too early on the first one - idiots) despite a bit of twinge in the left Achilles.

After that it was lineout and pod drills. This year we'll have a game plan thank fuck.

Seriously tho I reckon if I could get to 7 minutes that is probably acceptable - going at more than 6:00/km is starting to push it as a 44yo with no ambitions to play pro rugby.

@NTA thats always a good one, you are 'killing it' at the moment then!!

I was just happy that I could beat TR Jnr...right now, thats one of my biggest goals in most stuff I do, just to keep ahead of him, cos I know the moment he gets past me, I wont catch him again...

@taniwharugby problem at the moment is I'm back out to 106kg so not in the best shape for mobility, but the extra padding will help my scrum work, though I get the feeling I'll be playing a bit of hooker this year.
