I think if, as @Kirwan noted, they'd got Messam on early, straight after DMac got sent off, then they probably would have won it, and not fallen apart for 30 minutes.

I wanted an Aussie team to win at some stage - I just wanted it to be against someone else.

It was effect on the other players that was needed. Stopped playing like headless chicken a once he came on

Great entertainment, kept me well and truly engaged despite the cards ..
Chiefs showed tremendous heart ,but I do wonder if they went to the bench far too late but also just a complete loss of composure when they down to 13 players ..really needed some smarter game management to which I was disappointed with the senior players Brad Webber especially..

In hindsight, they'd have gotten away with their selections easily had their smallest player on the park not taken his defence to new levels. Or even if Tiatia had tackled the player rather than swatted at the ball.

Also on the timing of the substitutions, Messam did make a big difference this week (and hats off to him, a difference that I didn't expect). The coaches may have remembered the Blues game ahead of the Aotearoa final where he didn't have the same effect on his surrounding players, but they now know that for their timings next week to bring him on earlier...
