Another factor to keep in mind is the refereeing - Berry is for me the best of the referees in this series. I really don't like O'Keefe (too random) and know nothing Raynal other than being French which does not instill much confidence.

The way the maul is refereed is going to be very contentious with South Africa either complaining about players being in on the side or the Lions supporters wondering why they are being penalized. The way it is being refereed at the moment is really dogs breakfast and the sooner world rugby sorts it out the better.

And having a bok TMO will help!

    Jonker was a Springbok?

Think that he just means a Saffer.

He was a cop before being a bad referee. Bonkers Jonkers.

IIRC corectly it was even a mistake that he became a ref as someone didn't show up so he got handed a whistle. We all suffered for it after that.

If anyone is wondering I don't think that he is any good.

I feel for Jonker as TMO for this test.
He is basically in a no-win situation for every close call.
If it goes against the BIL's / in favour of the Boks, Gatland and his press contingent will be apoplectic.
If he is perceived as over-compensating and ruling against the Boks as a result... well, let's just say it won't be pretty for him locally.
Poor guy can't win. Best he can hope for is nothing gets referred to the TMO.

Given how much everyone hates a TMO who gets overly involved and keeps stopping the game to show the ref what he's found now, maybe this is the ideal solution? He's got no incentive to find things he doesn't need to

Righto... it's been ages, but I thought I'd better check in here again BEFORE the first Boks v BIL's test, just in case the Boks win it to avoid looking too much like a doos... πŸ˜‰

      My very truncated view:
Boks a bit underdone as a collective.
      Playing on soft, spongy deck.
      At sea level.
      No crowds.

I'd say that's probably advantage to the Lions for this first test.

I guess one can argue the toss about selections in both teams, missing players etc. but good talent on both sides.

Forecast set to good weather, no rain, very little wind but cold by Saffa standards - circa 7-10 degrees C.
      Should allow for good rugby.

Thoroughly looking forward to it - just gutted that I can't be in the stadium.

@bones @MN5 😬 Obscure comparison…. but Jauzion ran the game and ran straight. Faletau missed one high ball in SA A match and missed the cut… Thought Gatland saw him for what he always brings…straight running and he invariably sucks in oppo D spectacularly when doing it. And he reads the game very well from organisational level on defense too. Dunno why other than that but for some reason he really reminds me of him… Really enjoy watching him go

The Lions are playing their First Test against the Boks in the first test later today. Time for the Jim Telfer "Everest" speech once again.

In your heart of hearts you 100% know the Boks are going to win this. It will be un-Saffa to suggest otherwise.

Wyn Jones out with a shoulder injury. Double bugger. The thought if Mako having to face the stronger Bok fatties late in the game does not fill me with confidence.

Getting ready - we are in week four of our two week lockdown, so no beer and only the single malt left.

Already got "the talk" from Ms Barret about how this can be an opportunity to learn how to manage emotions under pressure. 😐

                                  Itoje playing very well.

I mean, how the ref thought he was on his feet for that last penalty is completely baffling.

To be fair Curry got a hand on it but couldn't budge it as it was being held.

Poor decision by Wyn Jones. That was crying out for kick to the corner and assert some dominance.
