@Machpants yeah thats how I saw the history.

    Well, what a fucking day!

Sure we had some luck from the officials (including the final penalty) but gee we also copped some shite too, so you take the good with the bad.

After our scrum started so well, we then struggled hugely, and got away with a bit while under the pump, but when O'Donnell and then Wright came on, while still struggling, seemed to be a bit better.

Been saying for weeks, this kid Heremaia Murray is the real deal, would love to see him get a run in his preferred mid-field, just seems a very smart rugby player and has played a part in our 3 brilliant tries to past 3 weekends - 2 of which must already be candidates for try of the season.

Best game from Reihana, despite a couple of missed kicks, is really starting to show his talent.

Rush & McNamara just into everything, defence, running the ball, just busy AF.

Gotta say, much maligned Hohaia, was solid today, had a hand in 1 of our tries with very crucial touch.

Hope the injury to Moulds and Moorby aint bad, both add so much to this team, Goodhue, Hallam-Eames, Mau'u all got through some work too.

Loving the work Macilai is putting in, chasing, defending and obviously running with the ball.

Man, I loved that, I couldnt watch that final kick, given it was practically the identical spot he missed the one from moments earlier!

Having a few beers in the Vikings lounge after, everyone was so stoked to finally nudge one over Auckland up here, so good, so so good!

Funny when this flashed up on the big screen

@taniwharugby great write up! I bet those beers tasted good.

Northland must be getting the best crowds in the comp now - good turn out again.

I think the conditions helped but I thought the skill level from both sides was strong. One of the better games I've seen this season.

@KiwiMurph you know what, in the 78th minute, we are down by 2, and Reihana was lining up that kick, I was thinking, fuck, this has been a great game, even if we dont take it, but when it went over, man, up there as one of the best games I have been to in a long time, the crowd went nuts!

When did Northland last beat comedy Auckland?

2008 was the last victory over Auckland

For comparison they've beaten Waikato 6 times since then

Not this year. I live in the now…..

    @taniwharugby

Possibly the first win at home in the NPC era, but I can remember watching Auckland being beaten at Okara Park more once in the early-mid 1970s. Twice in one season (1975 home and away?) from memory. Off to find my Rugby Almanacs...

@Pepe I am far too young to remember that!

They had a thing today for the 71 shield team, put that picture of a packed Okara on the big screen.

    Haha...... I suppose you are.
I was at that 1972 Shield Game in that huge crowd. The only thing I can remember is that we lost and all I saw was a sea of legs and kneecaps (reflecting my age at the time).

Its crazy to think where the Taniwha have come from within the last year whilst its only halfway through the comp and still plenty of work to do to secure a possible place in the playoffs theres been one hell of a lot to like about the way they have gone about their work in 2022.

The new High Performance based at Pohe Island in Whangarei is one of the best in the country especially for NPC purpose
The Blues Board were guests of the Northland and were completely bliwn away by the facility .
I guess the old saying “If you build it they will come “ truly applies .

On the occassions that i have stopped in i have often been told this your home Steven , make yourself at home wether its been by administration or the players themselves .
What has come through has been a sense of being , this truly is their Turangawaewae where they will make a stand
Kia Tu,Kia Manawanui ,Kia Kaha .

The players that have come into the enviroment are blown away by the sense of whanaungatanga and if you can identify with this feeling and make it your own you will defend the hell of it no matter what and that can be seen in the way they are defending .
Its fair to say the rode their luck yesterday , but at the end of the day it was defence that got them across the line
Truly amazing for a team that was paying $501 at the top of season ,being the dreamer i am , i stuck a $1 on the lads .

The other element that we have always known is the amount of talent that leaves the region , the beauty of building a success story people gravitate to an organisation or a team that is doing well .
Already expressions of super rugby interest from various franchises are starting to appear but also in and around NZ Under 20 .

@Steven-Harris whenever I drive past the HP centre, always people there, I think that has gotta help.

I was sitting up above Caird, Hawkins, Fono and a couple of the Dev guys and they rode the wave like fans yesterday, was good to see they are all in.

I think right now the biggest shift has to be with the addition of Veale to the coaching team, the defence is unrecognisable compared to previous years, and this is having knock effect to the teams attitude and in the past 2 weeks, the attack has sparked up.

Been some great forward power tries, last week I thought that end to end try was special, the one yesterday eclipsed it I reckon...that excellent try we got v Wellington, the one last week and then 2 yesterday, Murray played a crucial hand in each, sure others did too, but this is a kid in his first season of npc, playing like he was born for it.

When did you first mention him as a player you hoped Northland could entice back @Steven-Harris was at least a couple of seasons back I think.

Obviously I hope they ride this wave on and can make the top 4, but given the heartbreak of so many campaigns where we have failed to deliver, you are just waiting for it...but hey maybe this team is different, so far they certainly look it!

Any news on Apoua for next week? Wonder if Ofa will get released back, be good to have everyone back on board next week.

@taniwharugby yep Heremaia being a Kaitaia boy had always been on the radar, i know having had a chat to Eddie Evans ‘Coreys Dad’ he would love to see his young fella in cambridge blue sometime in the future .
I am super excited about Tama Anderson who is in line for NZ Under 20s ..super smart footballer who can slot anywhere in a backline but is destined for 10 or 15 but the one to watch is First Five Toby Bell from Kerikeri who has a bit Dan Carter about him
    Onwards and upwards

@Steven-Harris You seem to have an endless list of names…it’s so great to see.

After last year we know that Northland put a lot of effort into fitness. With the new home, and a changed attitude - driven by better management we are reaping the rewards. The team looks so much better with everyone contributing.

Fullback will be interesting with Moorby injured. I would move Murray back there and leave Reihana at first. Cooper to get time off bench. Ranger or Pisi to come back on the wing. Hohaia set up a try so might keep his position ahead of Ranger. We have cover at hooker and prop but scrum obviously needs work.

Leave Hohaia in midfield or Ranger?
