The suggestions my provider had to update .htaccess seems to have helped with their resource alerts. Not sure if that would help with the bot situation here
-
Is there any way of blocking the bots? A WAF or something? Or too costly?
(edit - I am sure you have already thought of this)

Modern internet landscape is going to be fun with these fucking AI startups stealing data from where ever they can to train models.
I've hidden some content from non logged in users. I can see from the logs the bots aren't scraping for rugby..

what? The most obvious ones are all over the Hurricanes threads

Yes that's basically what we are looking at. Tomorrow hopefully

Thanks @Duluth lots of grumpy old men on here with more money than sense that I am sure would be willing to help with any additional costs, myself included

There's no new costs. We are running at a slight loss though. We'll try to close that gap with ads before begging
-
There won't be any downtime today
I made a change earlier today that has helped. Non logged in page views have dropped a lot and the stress on the CPU has eased back
Speed seems almost back to normal
I want to let it run like this for 24 hours to get some better logs. Will do the maintenance later in the week

Cheers

How much is the shortfall? I suspect a number of people would make a small contribution than see ads

Not much. It still comes out of @Kirwan 's account.. He'll have the exact number
As for ads, anyone who donates won't see them. Will probably have 'awards' to remove ads too.. top 3 of the tipping contest, write quality posts, do good match commentary etc etc

Thanks @nzzp, beat me to posting the link. And the support is much apprectiated.
I think the plan is if you donate, no ads. Duluth may throw in other toys, we'll see what's available
@Kirwan is there an option to a have a yearly one off donation(easier to explain/hide) option

Patreon doesn’t allow for one offs, but this is all linked to my PayPal so I can DM that to you?
I’ll make sure Duluth includes you in contributing list.

Some of you might be interested in this:

Page views by people logged in is the red line. The other line is all the other page views
There's always a lot more people reading than bothering to create an account etc. However this is extreme. The red line is meaningless because it so much smaller
We had huge traffic during the RWC, then dropped back to the regular December numbers. Sometime in January we suddenly got 20million more page views a month.
On May 8th we got another load of bot traffic that's what killed the CPU
A few tweaks and it's dropped to a level the CPUs can handle. Still need to do a few things to get it back to normal though
