That kick from Laumape to set up Aso's 2nd try was outstanding, showed great awareness and vision. His form is irresistible at the moment.

Pissed off they still have Aso at 13. Chuck Jordie in at 12 or 13.

    Hindsight can be funny

Not it this case. He's still a crap 13 playing against a crap side. He should be on the wing.

Yeah fucken crap game from a crap player scoring crap tries and breaking a crap season record
You're crap Aso, Jordies heaps better

Step away from the crack pipe....

    Well that was entertaining.
Thought Black went pretty well. I hope he goes to the Blues next season. IMO he is exactly the sort of guy they need. Consistently solid with good skills. Doesn't try to do flashy shit which he doesn't need to and doesn't seem to get panicky when under pressure.
A guy like West can pull off a brilliant line break but seems to have more bad moments.
Probably the same reason i have doubts about Dmac as a long term 10. He is brilliant but plays such an erratic style that im not sure suits 10 (or test rugby in general).

Ben Lam was good when he came on. Has some real gas.

I'll keep this about the rugby

Aso is a very good winger. But he doesn't have the defensive or passing skills to be a 13. So what of he carves against the Cheetahs if he get his arse handed to him against the better sides.

I happily stand by what I wrote yesterday, regardless of how many tries he racks up against the powerhouse that is the Cheetahs.

Those asking about how Black played, well considering Barrett appeared to take the ball a hell of a lot at 1st receiver was telling.

Cheetahs left their tackling back in the Republic....

I said he was a crap 13 not a crap player. I repeated that numerous times.

Are you in love with him or something? This is bizzare.

@Rancid-Schnitzel Aso is not a crap centre. His defence has been shown up at times and is a major work on for him. If he could defend properly then a lot of people would be saying he should be in the All Blacks. He's a good centre, even with a few deficiencies.

Yes but he can't defend or pass properly. Therefore he is not a good centre. Proctor is a what a good centre looks like. Aso belongs on the wing.

    30mins in.

Canes have penalty. Into corner. Good lineout drive collapsed by Cheetahs. Canes penalty 5m out.

Canes go for lineout to set up a maul.

(Maul gets stopped twice and TJ yold to use it. But this is not my point. )

Now my question is why bother with the lineout to set up a maul? Unless you're looking for a Willy Away type move not just set up a maul off a tap?

    You're already only 5m out.

    Just a thunk.

Seems the lineout drive is considered a low-risk play which is a bit weird since most get stopped now. Legacy of the Brumbies cocktrain perhaps?

@booboo yeah i'm with you, just gives the attacking team another opportunity to fuck it up by messing up the lineout without gaining any territory. plus closer to the sideline which reduces options.
a smart play would be a quick couple of passes to a pod of forwards in centre field.

Why not a tap by a fatty with another couple of fatties on his shoulders to immediately bind as blockers and set the maul from there? Why bother with the lottery of the lineout?

Forgot to mention this last night, and no doubt @Stargazer and @Higgins will chuckle as well, Hugh Renton plays his first match for the Canes in his 3rd season and ends the match as captain. Also, he needs to be told by one of the other players he is captain too.

Is he the first Magpie captain of the Canes? Is this a beginning of a new era where our players don't all wind up at different franchises? Are we the new Naki?

@Nepia Ha, yes, I noticed the ref asking who the captain was and they all pointed at Renton. I was quite surprised to say the least. Have no idea whether he was the first Magpie as Canes captain.

A new era at the Canes? Hmm, I'll believe it if more current Magpies get contracts, and more importantly, game time.

@Higgins Yeah, true. Canes should lock Falcon in, esp if Otere Black leaves. Not sure whether any of the other Bay boys in the NZU20s are ready to make the step up. Unless new players make a good case for the last available SR spots, I can't think of more names. I rate Tangaere, maybe if he has a good season? Emerson? Geez, we've lost so many players ...
