@gt12 I'm sure the Canes will find a reason to still not giving Jonah Lowe game time.

He wasn't great when he did get some game time though. But he wasn't on for long enough to be fair. Maybe an option for center next week although I'm sure they Jordie well start there (as Goosen is unlikely to play). whats his defense like as its not Laumape's strong point

What you're on about? He hardly got the ball (about twice). That was his whole 10 minutes in the game against the Crusaders in which many other Canes players were average. In those 10 minutes he made the same number of passes as Ben Lam in 70 minutes, had the same number of runs, made more metres and beat one defender against Lam's 2. I call that good for a very short SR debut against the strongest team in the competition.

Johnny Fa'auli is off somewhere else next year, he was on the farewell video before the game. Not sure where though.

@mikedogz About that video: which other players were on it? I'm wondering about Sam McNicol in particular, considering the poor lad hasn't played since September/October due to concussion.

This is how Fa'auli earned his 4 weeks suspension last year (under Law 10.4(e) Dangerous tackling of an Opponent; that's now Law 9.13; mid-range entry point: 6 weeks):

How good did ALB look? Looks a lot leaner and definitely had some pace back, he's hot sweet feet eh. On the other hand, how pedestrian did Stevenson make NMS look? Yuck.

I was at the game and it was really noticeable having crowd shots and no replays on screen after something controversial - unless TMO called in. I just hope that continues through the play-offs, and no influence of officials against away team.

Bit disappointed with the attitude of Boyd and Canes at times. Fa'auli certainly a red card as always dangerous and made worse by player dropping, but Canes comments were over the top. Nothing said about the cynical high-shot by Perenara on Weber in the third minute, presumably because the impact was not so forceful. Then a couple of minutes later Riccitelli ignores the ref's instruction and takes throw-in inside the 20m, and then they argue the point!

Anyway, Weber was sparked by that into an inspirational performance. Wish they could keep him on for full 80!

geez the hurricanes were lucky that Jordie Barrett was so in-form. It would have been a blowout otherwise. He showed again that he is the number 1 fullback in the country. Although Weber had a fine game with some good plays, it was quite noticeable that when Tahuriorangi came on the Chiefs were more comfortable. Hope to see Tahuriorangi start in front of Weber next week!

We must have watched entirely different games.
JB my as well have had a Chiefs jersey on in the first half. He was aiding and abetting them every chance he had. He did regather himself at halftime and played well in the second half though.
Weber took the responsibility of being the spark that was missing without DMac. Best game from him this year. Not only the breaks, but he was really looking to clear the ball as rapidly as possible.
Chiefs play to a fast rhythm and Weber does that better then TTT, hence the reason he is starting.

@crucial It seems the June break has been good for him. The last few games, Weber seems to have re-turned to his pre-injury form (or at least, close to) and last Friday, he was awesome. Although I would like to see him play for the Magpies, I hope the AB selectors have noticed the improvements and that he's back in the AB frame.

I decided not to read this thread until watching a replay, which I've finally been able to do this evening.

TTT's form seems to be suffering through lack of game time since the AB series but there is no doubt that Weber deserves to be starting. Weber was mostly excellent in this game. I say mostly because he still throws some shocking passes at times, the first to MMac being a good example, but Weber's defence has been markedly better than TTT's in the last 3 weeks, and it was great to see him sniping to use his speed. Completely outplayed TJP.

Apart from his goal kicking, MMac just isn't up to this level. Personally, I think the Chiefs would have got the home quarter final with pretty much any other Super Rugby first five. He seemed to be at the heart of every time Chiefs lost momentum, and not particularly involved in the times they scored (could be wrong about the second point though).

I’d like to think that the coaches instructions were...”I have no option except to play him but that doesn’t mean you have to pass him the ball”

In fairness though he is a very good ITM level player, his goal kicking is good and apparently he has been doing a lot of the attack planning at training. Maybe another almost player that goes on to be a good coach because they have to work hard thinking about things that don’t just happen for them?

MMac was very average but, ironically, probably no worse than his esteemed opponent on the night.

The Chiefs have a couple of good young 1st 5s in their system - Falcon and Rivez Reihana, who was the co-captain of the U18s.

I agree with you. His try saving during the second half when he retrieved a loose ball was outstanding.
