every time I start getting back into things, my body says, nah take it easy bro.

My calf that I injured last year, when I wake most mornings, the achillies on that leg is tight.

So along with hip flexors, lower back, glute stretches I do every morning, have added the calves and achillies to it as well.

Weighed myself on Sunday night, 99.1...not good, need to get back down under 95kg.

Although I havent been running, still been doing a walk up the Mountain or for an hour on the treadmill, plus been challenging TR Jnrs team to get out of some fitness activities if they can all beat me...and as usual, my competitive nature comes out and I just about kill myself to ensure keep them from any shortcuts, and worse after the activity I have to still pretend I am not half dead haha

so still pretty active, I hadnt thought my diet has changed so much that I should be gaining weight instead of losing it.

Need to get back to posting about it to motivate me to do it more regularly.

      what he said...

had a shit sleep the other night, wake up with a sore neck from tossing and turning...

Been doing some extra leg work (calves) lately, legs always been my strength, but of late my calves been needing extra work and my knee that I hurt over 20 years ago and had arthroscopy on (specialist said I had damaged the anterior or cruciate?? but not enough to require surgery) has started aching a bit...I have always managed that knee and ensured I did lots of strength work on it, but havent for the past 2 months or so, so am wondering if that is why I am getting the ache that I have let the strength side of it go.

Sitting around 97kg, so slowly creeping down, but the slowly part possibly due to my inconsistent activity of late....did more of a talking and technique training for my sons team last night (following a heavy loss on weekend) whereas I usually provide some defence on team runs which certainly gets the blood pumping, but then my neck wasnt feeling it anyway, so it enjoyed the break from 13/14 year olds trying to smash me.

Bloody maintenance gets more and more important aye. Such truth to that 'always keep moving or doing something active' advice. It's the times when you stop, by choice or injury, that you can run into more issues imo.

'Use it or lose it' is about the truest cliche there is in my opinion. I think "oh I can't do that cos I'm getting old" is a fucken cop out too. I have any number of tubby acquaintances who eat shit and do fuck all and it shows. There's still a time and a place for takeaways and beers ( fuck living in a world where there wouldn't be ) but it all has to be part of a good overall balance. I probably go too far on occasion with showing my boys what I can do but I argue it's way better than being a fat, slovenly dad.

Just as long as they never expect me to wow them with any cardio they still think I'm a great athlete, what else matters ?

@MN5 I guess thats half my problem, in my mind, noting is out of the question...just my body is like WTF you think you are upto, stop, now!

I still like to give the boys in my sons team a run for thier money, a few of them think it is thier personal mission to knock me over (wish they tried as hard to hit the opposition...but thats another story)

We’re ( tragically ) at the age where we should have ample supply of ‘old guy’ strength and toughness....

At least that’s what I hope.....

Neck still a bit tight, but getting there.

Good workout Sunday, legs and shoulders tight on Monday, then had a 2.5km walk/sprint with the kids on Monday night, same again last night.

Rugby training Tuesday, getting stuck into ruck/maul drills and defence in team runs, man it is sapping doing that (especially when there is me and a couple of reserves against the whole pack haha)

Right now is just about maintenance and the usual trying to move a couple inches from the waistline.

Been asked if I want to play Golden Oldies later in the year, game will serve as a curtain raiser to a Northland game...yikes.

time for my annual visit to this thread.

Like most, plenty of eats and drinks over the past few weeks, and have just hit 3 figures weight wise for the first time in quite some time.

While I have been upping my activity the past 6-8 weeks with running, touch rugby and workouts, weight has been constant about 98kg, which can mean only one thing - what I am eating/drinking (work related Christmas activities started about 8 weeks ago) plus the company I work for purchased another company and the guys that joined our team, love a few beers every Friday, so that hasnt helped either.

Since I been off work last 10 days been doing alot of walking, mixed with some high intensity workouts, touch starts back in 2 weeks I think, I feel great, happy with shape aside from round the middle, and this contributes to the weight that I am not happy with...will have to chuck some of the food out, otherwise I will eat it until it is gone, which is just delaying my start...

ALso got a 'future appointment' for my Dr. in 2022 for a CVD check-up, so best start getting myself into shape for that 🙂

Well, was doing some stuff outside at home the other day, and as I was clearing the pics on our security camera I saw one of me with my shirt off...yikes.

I knew I had a bit extra round the middle, but my side profile...I was 96.6kg this morning, which is lower than I have been for a couple of years, feel like I am in decent condition everywhere but the middle...

Past couple of weeks I have been doing more treadmill walks and rowing machine (with the heat in our garage I am all but melting) touch rugby finishes next week too, which is a shame cos it's a great activity.

Plus I still go up the big hill on Tues/Thurs when TR Jnr is at TKD, it's these where I have changed how I approach them.

Normally I walk up the hill and run down, a couple of downhill PBs in recent weeks...I was thinking pushing myself up the hill is going to have better gains, and just cruising down hill is going to be easier on the joints and less chance of a mis-step and hurting myself (almost came a cropper last night as I came round a bend and about 6 late teen/early 20s girls were walking up, so I stepped off to the side slightly and half tripped on a stump...smooooooth

Been running every second set of steps, walking the next, or if small step sections, running a couple.

Anywhoo, this week, I have smashed loads off my uphill times, had a PB last night, which according to Strava, is the 14th best time ever going up (obviously for Strava users) and the 3rd best of the year so far...one of the great things about Strava is that you can compete with people while running by yourself!

The other good thing, usually on this route, particularly on the uphill section, my max HR is about 195/196, but on Tuesday max was 186 (this was a PB until last night) and last night I only hit 191, with my ave HR dropping slightly as well.

been a bit shit last couple of months, cant run up the Maunga in the dark (plus a few of the trails have slip damage following the rains a few weeks back) while TR Jnr is at TKD.

So I end up walking as I hate road running....may have mentioned that before...anywhoo, last couple of weeks have been doing a bit more weights and circuit stuff.

Destroyed my biceps/forearms on weekend, still sore AF today, musta been close to straining them they ache so much if I keep my arms contracted too long at my desk.

TR Jnr is making noises about taking a break from TKD after his next grading (later this month) so I ahve said if he does, we could join a gym and do that together instead...plus he needs a new TKD uniform, given his growth in the last year, which I'll get if he sticks with it.

Weighed in on weekend, was 100.1kg, but weighed this morning and was 97.2kg, so yeah.

Can confirm I still hate road 'running' in what I am sure was my first over a km since lockdown...

been a bit shit last couple of months, cant run up the Maunga in the dark (plus a few of the trails have slip damage following the rains a few weeks back) while TR Jnr is at TKD.
