It's pretty clear that the only good South Island AB loose forward of the professional era was Richie McCaw.

South Island coaches were so bad in that era.that Marty Brooke missed out on the ABs to Chris Tregasgis, and Zinzan Brooke, the most dominant NZ player of the 90s, got overlooked for Aaron Shithouse Pene.

My five least favourite Rugby people from the South Island.

Justin Marshall. Arrogant bastard. Talks so much sh#t he must be drowning in the stuff.
Laurie Mains. All the charm of Thunderbird puppet. Threw away the 1995 World Cup by not employing a proper chef.
Alex Wylie. Dirty thug. Always miserable. Outfoxed in 1991 by Bob Dwyer.
Bryon Kelleher. A man with no shame.
Todd Blackadder. Even less personality and presence than The Suitcase.

Always amazed me that Laurie Mains never picked Duane Monkley for the ABs in the early 1990s when he was perhaps the best player in the world at the time.

Aaron Smith played a huge number of minutes for the Highlanders, is 31 and is clearly the Half Back in NZ. I can understand the AB selectors trying to manage his workload.

Both Aaron Smith & TJP were outstanding in Super Rugby Aotearoa. Wouldn't be surprised to see TJP being pulled quite early for similar workload reasons.
