The only positive in that line-up is the return of Jordie Barrett. I can't see the Canes win this game though. Some shit (non)selections.

Looking at that Fifita seems to be classified as the third best lock (and at best that when it comes to the blindside flank position) given his selection ahead of a specialist lock in Mitchell. Mitchell in turn is selected as the possible cover for blindside ahead of specialist blindside Fifita. What have the selectors been adding to their drinking water to come up with that?

Apparently, Gareth Evans has an ankle injury.

Thanks, Hurricanes, for never providing injury updates. Those updates would make things a lot clearer.

                        Vince Aso also injured:

Head coach Jason Holland made four changes to that starting 15: Barrett returning for Chase Tiatia at fullback, wing Kobus van Wyk back for a benched Wes Goosen, centre Peter Umaga-Jensen for an injured Vince Aso (shoulder) and lock Scott Scrafton for Vaea Fifita who will come off the bench.

Aso’s was rated a minor injury by Gibbes while loose forward Gareth Evans will also sit out the match with a minor ankle problem.

The Canes have a big issue with incompetent coaches (its not only the head coach. Gibbes is hopeless as well). The big plus is Tiatia is no where to be seen
Umaga-Jensen is a bit limited but with Jordie back the back should be stronger. But the forwards are worse than last week (and last week was bad). With another plodder in Ricky Riccitelli added to the forward pack

The Chiefs should win and win well. And the shame is with even half decent coaches the Canes could put out a good side. I'm unsure why Coles doesn't speak up. These selections are also reflecting poorly on him

Aso's super unlucky with injuries. Underrated player.

Gallagher Chiefs Head Coach Warren Gatland has made five changes and one positional change to his twenty-three for the derby clash to kick off at 3.35pm.

Following a credible performance against the Crusaders last week, Gatland has named an unchanged forward pack. However, injury has forced Gatland’s hand to make changes to the side’s backline. Anton Lienert-Brown has been side-lined with concussion. Rookie Quinn Tupaea shifts into second five-eighth with Tumua Manu moving into the starting line-up at centre.

Electrifying fullback Damian McKenzie will run out for his 80th game in the Gallagher Chiefs jersey.

In the reserves, young lock Tupou Vaa’i and rookie loose forward Dylan Nel return to the twenty-three in the only two changes to the replacement forwards. After running out for Rotoiti Rugby Club last weekend, experienced halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi returns to the twenty-three and is joined by fellow Bay of Plenty teammate Kaleb Trask. Waikato’s Solomon Alaimalo completes the line-up in jersey twenty-three.

Gatland said they need to apply their learnings from previous encounters to deliver the performance they are after.

“Last week against the Crusaders we put on a solid performance however a few crucial moments cost us the win in a tight battle. We need to execute those opportunities to gain the win.”

“There is a great rivalry between our two teams and the boys are eager to get one back after falling short before lockdown. The Hurricanes have some elusive attacking players and are a dangerous team with ball in hand. We know they will be refreshed and eager to get a win, just like us, so it will be a tight tussle and one we know families and fans will enjoy,” finished Gatland.

Nankivell is listed to play club rugby again so obviously the coaches don't feel they need him in the 23. Wainui as midfield cover. I think 2nd 5 is Tupaea's best position so it will be interesting to see how he goes against Laumape.

More baffling selections from the Canes management - obviously they can't see what everyone else can

I am sure it hasn't gone unnoticed that when the Blues selected a decent halfback their form turned around too
