    James Drury, The Virginian

Handsome man, rugged babyface made for black & white westerns. He has a small role in Peckinpah’s “Ride the High Country” shot in colour, one of the best westerns of the sixties, maybe ever, but always takes me “out of reality” a little bit when I see him, because he’s supposed to be in b&w.

I grew up with the Goodies, and remember eye-popping when I recognized TBT in the original Willy Wonka (same way when I saw Reggie Perrin show up in 2001: A Space Odyssey). In colour, too. All I ever remember was watching Goodies in b&w on TVNZ pre-colorTV-era, like most of the old Doctor Who’s. In my mind they were all b&w. Was the original Brit production filmed in colour or was it always black & white?

This has happened 4 of the last 5 weeks — I make money on the Oz races and 12 hours later donate all of it back to the U.S. tracks.

    And so the cycle repeats.

The early $1 Daily Double at Gulfstream today paid $1,500

and the late Daily Double at Oaklawn that finished an hour ago paid out $5.6K on a $2 bet.

    Doubles ffs!!

    (The $1 Pick 3 paid $17K; the 60-cent Pick 4 (Quaddie) paid $32K; and the 60-cent Pick 5 paid $354K.)

Adeyybb wins the Queen Elizabeth. Japanese horse 2nd. Veery Elleegent possibly third. I had the winner in my Pick3, won $84 on a $21 wager. Meh. Shouldn’t complain. Thank goodness for Etah James is all I can say!

Sydney Cup - Etah James (NZ) win; Chosen One (NZ) 2nd. Should have played the kiwi-exacta.

Ooof, $1 exacta paid $213.40 on my tote.

I’ve got some wide cover in the next leg. I hope a kiwibred wins, but if not, Gailo Chop would make my day in a very big way...

Sydney Cup - Etah James (NZ) win; Chosen One (NZ) 2nd. Should have played the kiwi-exacta. Yogi was six lengths behind the rest of the field out of the gate.

    Etah James ...

He’s got Glenn Boss and 51 Kg, the lightest weight. I’ll have to take him in my multi-race.

Probabeel didn’t fire at all today in the Oaks, well back. Collette wins, with ease. Toffee Tongue (NZ) did well for 2nd. I took all three in my multis, but that’s not going to pay a lot.

If the Shark hadn’t got the stone bruise in his hoof I probably would have singled him. I’ll cross my fingers, but reckon Veery Elleegent might be the real danger. And fwiw in a small 20 cent Pick 3 I did take both the Japanese horse in the QE and Yogi in their Cup. Go you good thing!!

I do like several horses near the top, but they’re all carrying weight.

Te Akau Shark, Kolding, Veery Elleegent and Melody Belle are the NZers in the Queen Elizabeth. I think I’ll take all but Kolding and adding Addebbyb and Vow & Declare. Fve is more than enough. Betting against the Japanese import, hoping I don’t regret it. Ideally want to see Opie take it on the Shark, but I’d be delighted if any of the Kiwis win.

    Yogi will break your heart

I’d already placed him in my “toss” column.

Are you telling me he’ll break my heart if I don’t play him?

Track condition rated as Heavy. No rain in the forecast for Sydney today. They’ve had 25.2 mm precip the past week. How heavy is “Heavy”?

Having a hard time handicapping the Sydney Cup here. The Chosen One (18-1), Yogi (40-1) and Etah James (20-1) are the three Kiwi-breds in the race. Etah James ran a pair of good staying routes at Ellerslie the past couple months, including a 4th in the Auckland Cup in his last... is he worth taking here today??

2nd race at Gulfstream, a 12.5K maiden claimer for three-year-olds. There’s a horse Silver Maker in his third start; was purchased as a yearling for usd$800K. He came 4th. Somebody put in a claim and bought him for the twelve-thousand.

@raznomore I was talking to a musician-writer Gil Scott-Heron in the mid 1980s, and I told him I loved his song “Grandma’s Hands” which he’d released on an album prob. early 80s. He thanked me and said, “yeah, it’s a really beautiful song, thanks. But it’s not mine — it’s Bill Withers’. You have to get that record.” So I did. I’ve added several B.W. lps to my collection since, treasures all.
