Victory is the only option for Australia at this point - Sydney will be at least one day washed out and if we draw the series, India retain the trophy and I think we miss the WTC?

.India need to win at least one the remaininag tests to remain in contention. Australia's chances are a bit more tricky, they can still make the final if the draw one and lose one to India, but would then need to beat Sri Lanka twice in Sri Lanka.

@NTA Day one looks a bit dodgy for Sydney, but Days 2 to 5 look much better. Can't they extend the play on days 2 to 5 to make up for a lost session on Day 1?

Best outcome for everyone is a draw in both Melbourne and Sydney. Then Sri Lanka to beat Aussie in both games at home which would result in a South Africa vs Sri Lanka final!

That last over from Bumrah was a deeply tired man trying to do his best for the team.

The treatment of their only strike weapon points out two things:

As I've been saying, Rohit Sharma is a rubbish captain. Every problem is a nail when Bumrah is the hammer.

Virat Kohli is worse. I've been watching some of the chat behind the stumps and Kohli is at the centre of it, with Pant as his sidekick. Kohli is basically giving orders but not taking any of the responsibility at this point.

Last series you could admire his fight, but this series he's just proved what an utter shitc**t he is.

The political knives are going to be out if India lose this Test.

Rohit should never have been brought back, especially after the series defeat at home against NZ. Shubman Gill could have retained his place and done as good a job - probably better.

Bumrah should have stayed as skipper and the other bowlers should have fucking stood up.

I see he’s taken over 200 wickets and the average is still under 20. That is truly exceptional.

An even better start than Waqar Younis who took his first 200 at 20.61 in only 38 tests.

I wonder how his career will go in comparison as WY wasn’t as effective in his later years.

Wait that's my place a good 30km inland. Here's the CBD:

Australia have taken the win out of reach. I can't see India chasing down 333 in Day 5 of a test in Melbourne. But can they last out 90 overs without losing all ten wickets? All the pressure is on India.

Quick slog for Goat and ScoBo tomorrow morning. Literally get India in the field and guessing about the declaration.

If we last long enough, declare halfway through Bumrah's 1st or 2nd over for the day and put them in.

We'll lose half an hour but it could be mentally useful.

I think it's less useful than having more overs with the second new ball. Every over used up is an over leas they will have after the 80 overs and they can take the new ball.

Declaration overnight means they don't lose 2 overs for the change in innings. That's what I would do.

As I understand the position, India's chance of winning is slim to none and Aussie really need to win this game. If India can chase down 333 on day 5 that will be a great effort but I don't see it as something to fear.

@Damo they chased 324 on the last day at the Gabba in 21. I gave them no charge at the time. T20 had affected teams ability to score quickly for sustained periods

    Result
    Australia vs India, 4th Test
    India tour of Australia

    AUS 369 & 294
    IND 336 & 329/7
    India won by 3 wickets

That's fair but it doesn't change my thinking. If India have a great day they could do it I suppose. Would be a remarkable effort under pressure.

If Australia want to win then they may need to risk losing.

    Is Starc 100% fit?

If Oz only has three frontline bowlers, then I can see the point in batting on because Mitch Marsh, Head and Co having to bowl 20 overs would be worrying. Otherwise, this seems a bit cautious - even though India could still score the runs! Doesn't seem to be too many terrors in the pitch!

I bet Steve Smith is pissed off with his middle order - he got out trying to force the pace and they folded behind him!

Jaiswal owes his team 100. Rohit about the same.

Wouldn't be very optimistic about Rohit making good on his debt!
