    @frugby

I just had a go at this, cos it's RWC Final week, and fuck work, right?

Here is my bracket - it assumes current rankings, on the basis that we beat SA this week (shoot me), and assumes everyone performs in the RWC true to that ranking.

I didn't do the 3rd and 4th in each pool by the law, just kept allocating lower ranked teams to higher ranked teams, if that makes sense - so it might not be 100% right

I can't see any outcome too egregious - sure Wales and Australia might disagree with meeting each other in the R of 16, but it is what it is

    5ac2417b-406e-4281-b09f-5c68e36856fe-image.png

They won't do the knock-out stages like that though - ranking 1 to 16.

It will be predefined, and something along the lines of:
    Winner A v Runner up D
    Winner B v 3rd place C/E/F

Well of course, I've just assumed that those predefined fixtures will be primarily designed to ensure that #1 doesn't meet #2 until as late as possible, and so on.

    Hence my bracket says 1 v 16, but it's actually just Winner Pool A v 3rd in Pool C, Winner B v 3rd in Pool D etc

    Ah, gotcha.
I doubt they will go as far as planning for #1 and #2 being on opposite sides - I assume it'll be the usual random allocation of top 6 across the pools, then the next 6 etc. So most likely, being ranked #1 will be the same as #6

I predict that the only variation to that is that they might throw the hosts a bone - put Aus in the top pot of seeds even if they're not top 6 ranked; and maybe give them a 3rd place team in the round of 16 instead of a 2nd place

Don't they usually have 1-6 put in pools A-F with1 being in A , 2 in B etc.,not random. From 6 on I think they draw them . Next 6 is drawn from hat etc etc. Well how they do Women's WC, and had idea mens was same.

Twenty-four years after Jonny Wilkinson kicked that drop goal to win the Rugby World Cup, another decider will be played at the Olympic venue.

This is an important feature of the format

Perth will likely be one of the cities to host games in the round of 16 – a new feature in the 2027 World Cup, which will be the first to feature 24 teams up from 20.

Good. It's a cold, windy shithole with no supporting amenities and astonishingly overpriced food and beverages.

Weird to not have an east coast game and then Perth on the opening night - surely two games are better than one?

WR will be leaning on the refs for all NH semis 😉

Yep. They've done it to influence results before, by some accounts anyway.

It is not clear to me, if the 13 games in Sydney will all be played at Homebush? Or will some be at SFS?

(Also, similar for Melbourne, what venue? Or more than one?)

From an infrastructure POV. It is interesting to see what has changed in the 24 years since the 2003 RWC. In terms of stadiums.

    • Perth has a totally new stadium (with about a 15k increase in capacity from Subiaco used in 03.
    • Adelaide has a 3/4 re-built stadium. With an increase of about 20k over 2003.
    • Townsville has been totally re-built. About same capacity though.
    • SFS has been totally re-built,,with about a 20k increase, but not sure of it will be used.
    • Melbourne: The Rectangular Stadium is totally new since 2003, but probably won’t be used. Half of MCG has been rebuilt for same capacity (but wasn’t used in 03, not sure if it will this time)
    • Parramatta wasn’t used in 03, probably not this time either (but has been totally re-built since 03)
    • Robina is totally new since 03, but won’t be used.
    • I don’t know enough about Launceston, but assume it has expanded in that timeframe. Not used this time.
    • Gosford and Canberra were shiny-new back in 03 after being re-developed for 00 Olympics I think. Not being used.

In conclusion, Australia spend a shedload on stadiums.

Other conclusion is: The pressure on the host nation to re-coup their hosting fee means that fewer stadiums get used in modern tournaments.

SFS will be used in Sydney, but not Parramatta.
