Yay. I won the Melbourne Cup! (Sweep) This has convinced me the the higher the odds the better the horf. Ladbrokes had him at $151 ... wish put a bet on it.

yeah I had it in the sweep...went to top up my TAB account to put a fiver e/w, but a client rang, then forgot....TAB odds were as always, much lower, $80/$20

Pretty sure that's a case of big price fluctuations on a long shot, TR, and the liabilities the bookmakers may hold.

I've slapped $45 on the nose at $4.80. Hope to get some money back from yesterday!

Looks a good 1000m horse right now. The winner looked quality running away from the field

She blew like heck and took a bit to recover. She didn’t love the soft 7 I don’t think.

    A lot to like

We were talking about this in the pub last night. It was 6 o'clock and we realised none of us knew the result.

Go back a few years and we had an office sweep, people stayed behind to watch it and I always had a punt. None of that now.

Consensus was on course is dying and dedicated punters use the app.

Then the bar owner turned up pissed as a lord and explained we were all wrong. He'd been out at Ellerslie and had a fantastic time. Said Ellerslie has reinvented itself as a drinking establishment and everyone was glued to their phones.

He asked Chat GPT for the winners based on their draw, weight and jockey and was a grand up as a result.

Consequently, he loved everyone - and the drinks were all on him. So, although I forgot about the race, I definitely came out a winner with four free beers on top of the four I'd already had

Economic Impact report of the 2024 Cup carnival came out.

$1 billion in over all impact. 11.5 million people engaged by either attending, watching, or listening (half the adult population). Big ones were more than half of attendees were women, and 45% of GA ticket purchasers were under 35.

Women love dressing up. And getting fucking plastered on champagne.

How do they know how many people watched or listened?

The question was rhetorical. It's based on opt-in reporting and then sample size math where you attribute a "confidence level".

    tl;dr version: it's made up.

And blokes with ordinary heads like that because it increases the chance of pulling women.

I just found out it was on after opening this thread - this is what happens when you don't work in an office anymore I guess.

I'm loving a day on the punt. Gave myself the day off work. Sitting at home, knocking beers punting on each race. What a day.

I used to do that but punting on every meet, usually sent me broke by race 6..still fun though. Enjoy

There was a budget negotiation with the missus. I wanted 300. She offered me 200. We settled in the middle. Still a fair allocation.

Looking a fairly even Cup this year. Early indications suggest it's going to be a solid day, and it feels like it's getting its mojo back a little. Must be if it attracted @mariner4life all the way from Cairns...

we should just look out for the pile of empty bottles then?

Does seem to have more attraction this year though, not like previously but improved
