@Tim said in Crusaders vs Chiefs:

@gt12 It's quite possible that if the Blues beat the Chiefs in the quarter finals, then they would return to Hamilton to play them again in the semifinal.

Off the top of my head doesn't the new format always mean that sixth has to beat first twice in a row in order to make final?

    @pakman

    These are the rules:

In week one of the Finals Series, Qualifying Finals will be 1 v 6, 2 v 5 and 3 v 4 with the higher-seeded teams to host

The three winners of the Qualifying Finals will progress to the Semi-Finals

They will be joined by the highest-seeded losing team (the ‘lucky loser’), who will drop one seeding for the Semi-Final draw

    Semi-Finals will be 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 with the higher-seeded teams to host

So if 1 loses to 6, and 2 beats 5, then 2 (promoted to 1) would host 6 in the semifinal, and 1 (dropped to 2) would host the winner of 3 and 4?

If 1 loses to 6, and 2 beats 5, I assume that 1 would still be the 1st ranked team, and the winner of 3 and 4 would become the 2nd ranked team? Or would 3 or 4 be the highest ranked unbeaten team, and 1 would be downgraded to 2nd seed?

      @Tim Seems as if 1 loses to 6, and 2 beats 5 then 6 plays 2.
      BUT if 6 beats 1 AND 5 beats 2 THEN 1 plays 6 again?

I have a feeling Moana are gonna upset the apple cart by beating the Blues this week

Blues back from Fiji facing Moana off the bye who no doubt have been targeting this game

I said the same last time and looked like an idiot in doing so.

Massive game though, a bit of big brother v little brother in it. Returning from Fiji is always tough as well. Beauden Barrett is always a difference maker in games like these. Yes, he's known for being over the top with his kicking inbehind the defensive line, but he usually takes centre stage and has an ability to play the game at his own pace against teams down the table.

Christchurch will be a great location for a magic round. Central city stadium. Covered. Plenty of hospitality options near by. Only question is whether the city will be able to handle potentially 10k of fans coming into the city.

Will dominate the city for the weekend.

we had to go back to chch for a week or so earlier in the year...damn hotels were expensive, over $400 for 3-4 star places in the city, was very surprised

Hell I was there last week, and stayed at a pretty nice place at Twoer Junction for $180 a night, and then a few says later was just a couple of streets away from the new stadium at about $150/n

With Dmac at the helm the Chiefs are hot favourites for the title. Third time lucky in a final?

Lol already forgotten the second half hiding they got at the Cake Tin, short memories.

                    Chiefs with DMac - favourites
Chiefs without DMac - no chance

I mean I hope so but as a Chiefs fan I refuse to call it until the final whistle in the GF. 2023 hurt me too much.

If the Reds beat the Hurricanes next week, we are in for a blockbuster final round. I'd love it to be all set-up for a winner takes all clash between the Canes and Moana in Wellington.

By virtue of the fact they have the Drua left to play, the Reds are guaranteed 4th or 5th I think. Canes have to win one of the next two, on the assumption the Blues don't balls it up at home against the Tahs - who by virtue of points difference are surely stuffed unless they get two bonus points.

And the great thing after all this, is we should get a bonkers finals series. With no real frontrunner, and everyone being pretty much able to beat everyone, I really think this could be the best finals series since 2017.

                                    Sunday 18 May
Ardie Savea crowned 2025 Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year
Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea has claimed the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year title after establishing an unassailable lead in voting with two weeks left in the regular season.

The 31-year-old collected the maximum six votes against the Blues in Round 14, and 42 votes across the season so far, putting him beyond the reach of Tom Hooper (31 votes) and Damian McKenzie (28 votes) a fortnight out from the Finals Series.

Savea has been an imposing force for Moana Pasifika on both sides of the ball in his 10 appearances this season, scoring five tries, making over 350 post-contact metres, completing 110 tackles and winning 15 turnovers.

His impact has also been reflected in Super Rugby Pacific Fantasy, with Savea the highest-scoring loose forward in the game and for six weeks of the competition, the most picked player.

Moana Pasifika currently occupy sixth position on the competition ladder, needing one more win to lock in their first-ever Finals appearance.

“Ardie’s passionate leadership and dominant performances for Moana Pasifika this year have made an indelible mark on his teammates, his opponents and our competition as a whole,” Super Rugby Pacific CEO Jack Mesley said.

“He has received votes from the opposition in almost every game he has played this season, which reflects the consistency of his output and influence on his team.

“The Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year being a peer-voted award, where our players are recognised on a weekly basis by their fellow players and coaches, gives it the greatest possible significance.

“We are delighted that Ardie Savea is the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year.”

Savea will be formally presented the Player of the Year medal at Moana Pasifika’s final regular season game against the Hurricanes at Sky Stadium on Saturday 31 May.

I love this sort of shit aye, bringing some much-needed life back into Super Rugby. Hopefully this rivalry flourishes in Auckland in years to come.
