The Highlanders came bottom and would have had Kelleher, Randell, Wilson, Tony Brown, Kronfeld in their side.

Just goes to show how competitive the Super 12 was.

Alatini too, and didn't Lima play in MF for them? He was no slug

Yes, forgot about Alatini.... Kees Meeuws and also Anton Oliver.

Karl Hoeft, Simon Maling was considered so good at junior level that a certain R McCaw left Otago catchment and went to Canterbury 🙄. Nick Evans.

Sam Harding was the swapped player. Otago/Canterbury had a no poaching policy. Otago breched it picking up Harding. Canterbury went after McCaw. I think Hansen has told the story on a couple of podcasts.

    Maling was a lock.

Ah yes Harding. I'm sure it seemed smart at the time. Oops 😬

Dunedin schooled players out of the Haka Valley is a bit of a sore point. Right on the border of the two franchises. McCaw and now George Bell in red and black.

Harding was a good player, just a long way from our greatest All Black of all time.

in fairness hadn't harding been preferred as the school boys 7 or something? it wasnt as crazy a call at the times as it has turned out to be, form memory Richie had also wanted to go to Lincoln to study

@nonpartizan i'd always thought it was as simple as he was 29 when he went overseas, so closer to the end of his career than the start so wanted to make some money overseas

@canefan i think it was more a case of he actually committed to study for a year or two, i remember people at school saying he'd be an AB

It was Kronfeld who was quoted in the media that McCaw had been selected too early....many years later I think he has been asked about it and admits he got it wrong...

If everything were to unfold as expected over the next four weeks (which obviously happens all the time), the Chiefs could find themselves playing all four New Zealand franchises one after the other (plus Moana, the Crusaders and the Hurricanes previously) in order to claim a Super Rugby title. Would be a remarkable run.

Just watching the Chiefs game now.... Some of their backline play is pure poetry.
Ratima to Mackenzie to Stevenson entering the line, inside ball to QT who passes to Mackenzie on the loop. It's why you watch rugby. I know Stevenson is leaving but I hope the nucleus of the team is kept intact.

I have been enjoying their back.play for a few seasons now, the way they get others in space with their passing and the way the runners aim for space. I have noticed some of the backs have a similar passing style. I am guessing there is a talented backs coach in the Chiefs. Randle or someone else?

What about the Brumbies? Kind of expect to see them in the final.

If the Crusaders beat the Brumbies in Canberra next weekend (which I think is a fair assumption) then the likely finishing positions will be:

                            1/ Chiefs
                            2/ Crusaders
                            3/ Brumbies
                            4/ Hurricanes
                            5/ Reds
                            6/ Blues

In which case, the Chiefs would play Blues, then Hurricanes, then Crusaders. All of this is dependant on there being no upsets of course, so it's a bit moot - but could eventaute still.

At least if we lose this one we are likely to get a second chance. If we place 4th obviously.

The benefit of playing the Brumbies is that it will likely be the last scheduled quarter game, so before kick-off we will know whether we must win the game, or whether we can manage players knowing we are already in the semis.

@Canes4life Surely for integrities sake that's the first game played. Would be shithouse if they both rest their top teams coz they potentially have a guaranteed second chance.

I think it will definitely be Saturday to give teams at least 7 days to prepare. I guess it's one of the bonuses playing in that game. Both teams will likely start with their best teams but if they are locked in for a semi, I'm sure certain players will be pulled earlier than usual in that game I'm sure.

Can't see that happening. Brumbies wouldn't want to risk coming to NZ to qualify, and Canes obviously will want momentum?
