Hurricanes 2026

The excellent (and independent) Wellington club rugby website is reporting rumours that the WFRU might have sold it's 50% stake in the Hurricanes to one of the guys behind the NZCIS based out in Upper Hutt
See about the 10th or 11th note in the below link for word of this

@canefan The Hurricanes are owned by the Wellington Rugby Football Union (50%), the offshore investors Y11 Sport & Media Group (34.38%), Coastlands chief executive Richard Mansell (12.5%) and Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Football Union (3.12%)
They were bleeding money like there was no tomorrow and being cash strapped themselves the WRFU might not have had any other choice

Wellington have also shifted all their games for this year to Porirua park which is interesting. The price point for tickets is still far too high at around $24. Should be $15 max in my view.

Kini Naholo has chosen to extend with the Hurricanes. I’m being told a 2 year deal through 2027.

Amazing news. 2026 is definitely the best chance the Canes will have at winning the comp in probably 10 years. The biggest issue for them will be ensuring players remain fit.
Have updated above.
I feel like the Canes need another 7 in that loose forward unit. I know Sione Halalilo trained with the Canes all year so hopefully he sees a bit more gametime for Wellington in the NPC. He's another dynamic 7 in the mould of Lasaga, Savea, Lakai etc.
In terms of hooker and after watching Tuputupu completely botch it against the Brumbies, I'd prefer we re-sign James O'Reilly who was really good for the Canes in 2024 when Aumua was out.

The oil continues.
A 1 year offer is on the table for Pouri Rakete-Stones. The offer I stated about Rova yesterday is a 2 year offer.

Oh wow, I used to live in walking distance, bit further now.
Thats a pretty solid decision to keep costs down. -
Josh Moorby is leaving Montpellier. Nothing on where he is going but could he be returning to the Canes?

@Canes4life Interesting that he was only 1 year into a 2 year contract with MHR. 16 matches, 10 at Fullback, 2 wing and 4 off the bench, 2 tries.

The Canes need to sign wingers as well so hopefully he comes back.
-
I can now name the player I mentioned in the 2025 Canes thread that was working to get out of his contract for next year - the request has now been granted.
Peter Umaga-Jenson will be leaving and heading off to Japan. By all accounts the Hurricanes and NZR were really good about it.
@Landers92 As his biggest fan boy nooooo, nah totally understand why he’s going Wainui is definitely going to miss him.

Any oil if Zac Gallagher is staying? Or going back to the Crusaders?
He’s going to Japan. It will be announced by the Canes in due course
@Landers92 Bot of a shame thought he had potential thank your for all the good oil.

Callum Harkin puts pen to paper.

I hope you lot keep him happy, he has an Irish passport and the Irish know this.
-
@BerhamporeNinja Harkin is actually 26... everyone assumes he is some youngster because he has burst through from obscurity.
@frugby
Correct has an Irish passport - from what I understand he was a halfback at Stream and because he was a year ahead of himself at school he went to Ulster for like a gap year and made Ulster U19’s. Turned down an Academy contract there. Came back made a Wgtn XV played against NZU20’s and Ricki Flutey converted him to 10 for Wgtn U19’s.
Scored a try for the Canes against the Saders in a preseason match back in Feb 2019 but broke his leg in the process. Could have found himself playing professional rugby sooner but he has won Jubilee Cups in 2020 and 2024 and has played over 75 Prem club rugby games in Wgtn at 9, 10, 12, and 15.
He has a body of work behind him
