Just finished the doco. You forget how immense that tour was. That 96 team was one of the best AB teams of all time (obviously), chock full of HoFers. And the unflappable John Preston. Comes on and kicks two tough kicks to see us home. Ice in his veins, what a legend. And that DG from Zinny. Should have been him kicking us to win at RWC95. What a brutal tour

@canefan My memory was that we played 4 tests there too, and the first one didn't count because it was tri-nations. So we had a 3 test tour after a 1 test one-off.

    Edit: nope, not faulty memory
New Zealand and South Africa played four test matches; the first was the final match of the 1996 Tri Nations Series. The next three was for the test series which the All Blacks won 2–1.

He played the first test, got injured midway through the second, Preston saw us home in that game. And we lost in Jo'burg I guess

I don’t think I’ve screamed as loud during an AB match than when Wilson scored his second try in the Lottus test. What a game.

We had our moments in that Ellis Park test but what I remember is Honiball putting on a bit of a clinic.

Winning that series was my favourite AB “moment” until the 2011 RWC final win surpassed it.

I seem to recall we came back late with a couple of tries and got close but were always too far behind.

    Will have to google.

I don't think anything has ever made me feel so proud as Sean Fitzpatrick thumping the ground

I remember watching the breakfast replay of the Pretoria test after watching it live a few hours earlier. Was still buzzing.

Yes. I googled, AI says apparently it is still held at NZRFU HQ in Wellington. They should display it somewhere people can see it. Somewhere large....

Equally as absurd as that trophy was Fitzy clearly getting product placement in by lifting it together with his water bottle 😄
