@shark Something like “if Scott Hamilton becomes an All Black, I’ll eat my hat” followed by AB team announcement, probably on a Thursday, and various helpful recipes for hats.

I thought it was you predicting FABSH?

And in a small squad he picked five fucking wingers so we got to scrap the bottom of the barrell.

It was me predicting it, yes. But I had been for a couple of years leading up to that announcement. FABSH had been on a very, VERY obvious upward curve for a while.

I just googled Scott Hamilton, went to his wiki page and check this out! Obviously someone from TSF or familiar with it has written or updated this page. Gold!

"Unlike many of his peers, Hamilton did not feature in age group teams in his development years. In fact, while at school at Christchurch Boys' High School, Hamilton could not make his first XV, instead playing in the third XV. However, with his skill set, and at the end of the Crusaders and Canterbury backlines, it was considered by most rugby pundits to be a formality that he would eventually go on to higher honours – a point alluded to by his nickname FABSH (Future All Black Scott Hamilton).[citation needed] Indeed, it was a surprise to many that it took as long as it did for him to be named in the All Black squad for the first time. He was named in the All Blacks squad to play Ireland.[5] All Blacks coach Graham Henry said of Hamilton's All Black selection, "We like the way he anticipates, he's got a good feel for the game in the back three. He reads the play well. He's got a huge work rate and he's deserved of selection".[6]

Due to an injury to All Black wing Sitiveni Sivivatu, Hamilton was promoted from the bench of the 2006 mid-year series against Ireland, to the starting 15 for the Argentina test. This was Hamilton's All Black début, and he celebrated it by scoring a match winning try in the second half. "

I went to a shield game at Eden Park in 79 I think it was that left an impression on me , I was about 17, Auckland had only just won it

Auckland v Counties , Counties won, they had a team that was flying at the time, I was living in Auckland but had done most of my growing up in Counties area, there with my Auckland mates ,

Those were the days where you could take your own Beer into the ground, chilli bins full of it , place was rocking,

There were drunken punch ons out in the streets leaving the ground, spot fires breaking out everywhere ,like scenes from an old western movie with random knocked out bodies around the place, which wasnt much of a big deal then , different times thats for sure

I recall the game. Auckland came back and I think Richard Dunn (brother of Eddie and Ian) kicked a penalty to win. (Or maybe push it out to 4 points.)

Counties were NPC champions in 1979.

On the subject of Counties - I just saw a photo of Bruce Robertson sporting a Counties jersey with the number on the front of the jersey.

Was this something that only Counties did or did other provincial teams also do that in this era?

Tx booboo. It threw me for a second cos I can't ever recall seeing a rugby jersey with the numbers on the front.

I wasn't alive but yes that did happen, I used to have the game on video growing up haha, to win 11-9. Counties scored a length of the field try too.

Counties really were the unlucky side in shield matches in the late 70s/early 80s.
