Peter Russell - RIP
-
The Marist St Pats family is deeply saddened to share news of the passing, in Greytown, of Peter Russell. We offer the Club’s sincerest condolences to the extended Russell family.
Marist St Pats was fortunate to have the support and presence of Peter Russell over many years. Peter coached Marist St Pats Premier grade teams to win both club rugby’s major trophies in 1999, the Swindale Shield and Jubilee Cup (the last Jubilee Cup final played at Wellington’s old Athletic Park); the millennium Swindale Shield in 2000, and MSP’s first Jubilee Cup final played at Wellington’s new Stadium in 2001. The Premier team, under Peters continued coaching, went onto win club rugby’s Jubilee Cup again in 2002.
Peter contributed immensely to the Marist St Pats family for many years. He helped many to achieve representative and professional level rugby union; all while being a humble, fun, caring and engaging person. Peter, was awarded the Club’s WM O’Connor Memorial Cup as the Most Outstanding Club Member in 2001.
Peter’s coaching career continued at NPC level, Super Rugby and international club level. Rugby Union has lost a very good person.
We trust that the knowledge that the extended Russell family are in the thoughts and prayers of so many Marist St Pat’s players and supporters will be of comfort at this time.
Funeral details are to be advised.
