This is the first time I remember seeing Cullen play. I had to find the match programme as this was a curtain-raiser to a Waikato-Otago NPC game in 1993. There are a few other familiar names in each team, including the current AB coach. I remember that the Northern Region won easily but Cullen was the standout player of the match.

Interesting 7 for North.
An observation: Interesting some of the names that came through, more interesting the huge majority who didn't.

Expanding on that ... basically the cream of age grade rugby in the entire North Island in a given year, maybe 2 years before they hit senior rugby, and there's 2 (and a half) ABs (and a Flying Fijian).
And I only recognise 6 Provincial level reps:
Collins
Smith
Robertson
Spice
Randle
Cullen
Kerr (added, thanks @Bovidae )
Karauna (also added) -

More well-known names in the NR team. The front row all played for the Chiefs, an AB7s player, a couple of ABs, and a rugby writer/journalist. The spread of PUs in the CR team would never happen now.
Don't remember Hazelton, 7s rep Randle? And Journo?
-
The AB7s rep is Damian Karauna. He played for Waikato, BOP, the Chiefs and Hurricanes.
The journalist is Campbell Burnes (Rugby News, etc).

Pretty sure Danny Trigg was from up here, probably at Uni, played many games for Kamo and may have made our dev side, although he was a 9, so maybe didnt grow

@booboo
In the Central team
Mark Urwin played about 80 games for Taranaki
Jarrod Ross had over 20 games for Mid Canterbury
Joe Filemu had a dozen or so games for Wellington in the mid 90s
Carl Baistow had spells at both Poverty Bay and Manawatu for about 25 games in total
Keryn Martin and about five games split between Nelson Bays and Wellington -

Of course not, because that team will be selected from Canes central so it will be 90% Wellingtonians.

I played with two of the Central Regions team, played against four that I know of - but there's two HB players I've never heard of so may have played against them.
It;'s a weird selection really, there's good schoolboy players missing from that team, but some like Kerr are there, then there's guys a year out of school.

See my post above, I don't think that was the cream at least for the Central Region (well aside from Cullen, and TBF that back 3 is pretty handy), and it took me a while to figure out the flying Fijian was Smith.

@booboo Arron Pullman played over 150 games for Waitemata in the Auckland club comp , also played Auckland Bs
Stood around 6’5 -6’6 with a very solid frame , would have easily played provincial rugby if he moved away from Auckland
One of those locks in the Brent Anderson mould
