There really needs to be a moratorium on using Rolling Stones songs in trailers.

@Virgil so when you say who survived, watching it I thought

Pete was going to sacrifice himself for Garraty, was that how it happened in the book then as opposed to Garraty for Pete. At least Pete killed the Major for Garraty

Yeah 5MPH would be a considerable walking pace to maintain.

Was a decent enough watch, moved at a decent pace, but just lacked something for me.

The book is better, alot of details and characters were left out...

For a start there are supposed to be 100 runners, not 50. Stebbins is very different in the book, hes this mysterious kid who is always at the back of the race, he never talks to anyone. Ray Garraty is almost obsessed with him. He looks completely unbeatable for almost the entire Long Walk.
Another change is Ray has a girlfriend, Jan who he constantly thinks about. Shes his motivation and seeing her (with his mum) is what keeps him going. Shes his first girlfriend, he walks for her. Pete had a GF too, its a bitter sad tale. They had a fight and she actually caused his scar, which is meant to be on his face. Not shoulder.
They removed a character called Scramm. Who is this big beefy dumb witted guy who is the fav to win, he's the one with a wife which all the other kids couldnt believe. He gets sick (Not Stebbins) and it wrecks his walk. He gives in and dies. Other guys we see are better fleshed out too.
The biggest change is the ending, the final 3 are correct but Pete dies first, he just sits down and is killed as Ray tries to pull him along. Then its just Stebbins and Ray before Stebbins eventually cracks and collapses. Ray then just walks off kinda having lost his mind. No one kills the Major
Also the major didnt execute Ray's dad, hes taken away, 'squaded' disappeared and hes never seen again. Think Nazi Germany in the 1940's..
Also its hinted throughout the story that the US lost the 2nd World War, the Nazis won....

Fun fact too, this was Stephen Kings first ever story he wrote. Its only a novella, longer then a short story but nowhere near full novel length. It was written during the Vietnam war when he was at College.

One of my favourite King stories. I read it again a couple of months ago and it occurred to me that...

Garraty might have died at the end. The mystery figure dressed in black could have been the grim reaper. Or something else I thought of, was the figure 'Flagg' drawing him to darkness? I have never picked up on the Nazis winning the war

For sure, its a typical book ending where its vague.
In fact im pretty sure 99% of anyone who 'wins' the long walk never survives much longer.

From memory there are subtle hints about the US losing WW2 throughout the story.
Its definitely set in a different timeline to the current.

Felt to me the movie didnt need to make all those changes, no doubt it was because of budget restraints too. But its a short movie, an extra 30 mins would have allowed for what was cut out.
happy they didnt hide the gore and the horror though

    A House of Dynamite

Well acted and exciting with a pretty cool ‘three different viewpoint’ perspective…….missile on its way to US soil and how the White House intends to deal with it.

But all let down by a really stupid ending rendering the whole thing pointless.

    The Long walk

Stephen King adaption of young men in a post war America volunteer to walk until they are the last one to win a big bunch of money and a 'wish', the catch is, you cant stop or drop less the 3mph, if you drop out, you are shot.

I think its meant to deliver a message about friendship, human spirit etc...

2.5 final warnings out of 5 now do you take a dump

Watched this on a plane so devoted more attention to it than a lot of movies I've watched lately. I really enjoyed it; acting was good, pace (no pun) felt just about right - perhaps if anything a little rushed.

Interesting reading @Virgil's point about the differences in the book, but I hadn't read it so took the movie at face value.

    @antipodean

If you’ve never read the book then absolutely you’d take the movie on its on merit. It’s very well done.
It’s just much harder if you’re a long time fan of the original book. A lot of Stephen King fans would have this as one of their favs. Lots of his stories have in the past being changed significantly when turned into a film. A lot of times it’s been needed. But in this case it surprised me as it’s such a pretty simple and short story
Now I know how those lord of the rings nerds felt back in 2001…

    The Astronaut

Really good premise and plot with some genuinely scary moments but let down by cheesy dialogue and ham acting in the last 15 minutes.

    Watched Platoon again.

Such a good but brutal movie.

The likes of Sheen, Depp, Whittaker all very young.

Man, Berengers character was pretty menacing too, John C. McGinlys was an absolute cowardly fluffybunny.

The score hits hard, fits perfectly.

4.5 friendly fire out of 5 fuck im glad I never had to go to war

I've had a rethink and my review was a bit generous. I'm going to knock half a point off and give it 1.5 out of 5.

SUCH a load of shit that genuinely started well.

I think about it more and the whole "three different viewpoints" thing was actually pretty stupid and boring, by the third act, while I enjoyed Idris Elba as el Presidente, we knew exactly what was coming even down to what line was about to be said.

Jared Harris and Tracy Letts ( had to Google that one ) play a pair of completely unlikable dickwads.

Avoid this nonsense at all costs

    @MN5 yeah

critics refer to it as an "all star" cast too.

Idris Elba is a big name ( and even he isn't really genuine A list like some others ). The rest are the sort of "vaguely know them from such and such" type faces.

This movie is all hype and zero substance.

@MN5 havent watched it, but a colleague was discussing it, and was annoyed about the ending

with the director leaving it open for viewers to decide how they thought would end....fucking cop out!

    Think I'll pass.

Well, I really liked it. I like those types of talky movies and I thought the switching focus was a good way to tell the story. The only storyline I felt completely out of place was:

The FEMA worker, but I guess they were using her to show the nuclear bunker at the end.

    On the ending:

I kind of guessed that would be the ending as it progressed, so it didn't jar as much with me as I assume it does with others.

I'd even add all the points that @MN5 knocked off and in the context of it including Rebecca Ferguson, put it up to 4 out 5.

    So the.......

same story three times ? if watching people on a zoom call from different perspectives with absolutely no clear ending floats your boat then yeah, the movie was amazing 😉

I thought it was complete shit, interested in the views of others !
