Went and got Garage Project valley series. Tasted all 4. Had 2 L last night with my mate ... 8% hits you, but it's damn well worth it.

I a bit of fan of a few Garage Project beers mate. But living in the Naki, I just get a few sent up every couple of months. I have become a real fan of Roots brewery just north of Whanganui, and fortunately everytime I go to Whanganui, Mrs even remind me to get in there as we pass to have a quick taste and stock the fridge up for rugby etc. Pity we got nothing closer used to call into 'Forgotten 43' in Stratford for a couple of tastes etc, but they closed down.

What the fuck. Forgotten 43 closed down? Or - I knew they closed down the taproom, but are they still brewing?
I proudly rock both a Forgotten 43 and a Whanganui Roots t-shirt around Seattle. The time that a woman saw the Roots T and asked "where's that brewery, I'll have to visit that... " - yeah, smashed her dreams. Unlikely, love.

Yep mate it's closed, they opened a new pub on the corner of (da-da-da) Forgotten 43 highway and Main St in Stratford, never really seemed to get going there. I called in a couple of times to get some beers etc and fridge was reasonably empty. Then one day I went passed and they had just shut up. One of mates at Eltham Golf club say they just were finding it all abit hard as the 2 fellas who owned it etc were still working fulltime.
They were a good story of how they got started too. Both did a bit of home brewing and were playing in a rugby match between Toko and Stratford at Toko, one of the 2 players got injured, and as his Mrs went on to see how he was (3rd/4th div so no medical) the Mrs of another one said 'I'll keep an eye on your kids". After that the 2 chatted realised both hubbies brewed as well as played rugby etc, and so started the brewery.

Roots is a great wee spot. I’d always grab a flagon for the evening when I travelled up that way for work. Really nice solid beer, excellent IPA as I recall.

@Dan54 Yeah - I'd dropped into the original taproom a couple of times, and was considered a bit of a "regular" at the big spot on the corner - would always drop in after a sweet ride out to Whangamomona (fuck I miss that road... next month....)
Was heartbroken when I was last back - to see the corner place turned into a boring generic bar - had high hopes they'd just down-scaled back to original site. But no? Damn. Goddamn Gen-Z - need to get into the booze.

Yep mate, got a bloody nice couple of IPAa and tasty Amber Ale going through there last week. Actually the time before that I got few hazys, I couldn't hardly see into the beer it was so hazy/cloudy, was a brilliant taste. I mentioned it to the brewer , he said one fella kind of moaned he thought it wasn't clear enough, and he said he just pointed to the name. Like most micro brewers I have talked to hear and Aus etc, a real passion for what he does.

Yeah I always like supporting small businesses so it was an absolute no brainer to get a flagon or two to have in the hotel in NP when I got there. Like a lot of them the beer didn't travel too well so I always had to make sure I drunk it all that night.

Another magic spot is Godzone brewery in Hawkes Bay. Beer, Pizza and Biltong in a beautiful setting. Life doesn't get any better.

@MN5 Yeah - the guy at Godsown knows me by sight, if not name - always a friendly welcome when I make my annual visit to Hawkes Bay. Great spot for the final stop on a Waimarama / Patangata Tavern / Waipawa Butchery / Godsown Brewery loop on the bike.
Sitting out amongst the hops, with that batshit crazy dog.

Same here. isn't it a terrific spot ?

He is the very definition of a guy living the dream. Will be popping in to meet a mate of a mate ( who I had no idea had moved to Napier ) on the way to the girls family for Xmas. Can't wait for a couple of cheekies.

I'm convinced mate, will be calling in there when I head up that way hopefully in a month or so.
Just find this another reason to come into this site, any recommendations of good breweries etc is always gratefully received, and will be kept note of. I not actually a big drinker by any means, just figure I amy as well drink good tasty stuff when I do.
Lol and funnily enough Mrs who doesn't drink beer is really keen on me trying breweries and happy to come along etc.

I'm a quality beer drinker rather than the quantity beer drinker I used to be. I'm lucky in that the girl loves breweries, she's big fan of Hazys and sours and we'll happily get a tasting paddle each. Always good fun !

She'll never ever buy beer at the supermarket though, will always get Rose or Pinot Gris.

On that note - the word "Beer" has appeared in two cryptic crossword puzzles I knocked off today.
If that's not a sign - I don't know what is... off to brewery.

That's a good description of how I feel I am too mate. Few mates at Golf Club who not into craft beers (which I tell them is fair enough), don't get why I tell them I won't drink out of cans or stubbies etc. Jst lose too much of flavour I reckon.
