The scene that bothers you needs to be judged when it's finished. It's not uncommon for scenes in trailers to be missing special effects, so for all you know it could have lightening on the stick.
I agree that they need to address why they were unable to shoot him from point blank though.
Stormtroopers aren't exactly well recognised for their shooting skills.

I plead guilty to being rather passionate about Star Wars which (probably like you) was an important part of my childhood and didn't include blind guys fighting with sticks. I came across a picture of the actress that played Tripitaka, but I don't remember her looking like that...

Something that has been bothering me about the whole SW saga which occurred in A New Hope and it is this: If Luke was being hidden from the most evil, all powerful empire ever seen, with two leaders with extraordinary force power, why did they not change his name from Skywalker? I mean, they could have found him in the bloody phone directory.
