Jesse Ryder had so much natural talent, just couldn't handle the other demands sadly

I feel like going to what is essentially a glorified piss up isn't a great choice for him, but he's an adult. It's a good get though, along with Wagner and Southee it's a pretty strong line up.

@canefan Jesse Ryder was such a talent.

Smoking 140+ bowlers for 6 and just giggling. What a player. So sad his demons were out of control

Imagine KW, Taylor and Ryder clocking up 100 tests.....sigh. He had arguably more natural talent than even those two.

Same age as RT, also a very handy bowler.......the all conquering test champions would have been even better if he had stayed the course and had the career we hoped he would.

Lost in the news about the three centurions for Otago is that Glenn Phillips made his return from his groin injury. He only lasted 18 balls.

Saw Wags recently - he still looks like he could take the new ball for an eight over spell tomorrow.

Second test - India vs SA.

Luckily it's only a two test series so the Jaaps won't get the chance to match our 3-0 victory.

They're well on the way to winning 2-0.

They made 489 in their first innings and India is presently 119/6.

Unless they suddenly find Dravid and VVS style partnership, they're going to get thrashed!

I'd seen the South Africans racking up the runs and was curious to see if this was a return to an early 2000s style Indian road. Seems not.

So South Africa finish with a first innings lead just under 300 and choose not to enforce. Be interesting to see how long they bat for. My guess is they'll aim to declare just before lunch with a lead of about 450 and give themselves 5 sessions plus a couple of niggly overs. Light has consistently been an issue so they'll probably lose a decent chunk of playing time that way.

I've kept an eye on Wiaan Mulder since he opted out of going for the world record score vs Zimbabwe.

                      Since his 367 not out he's gotten 17, 0, 24, 11 and 13.

Zimbabwe probably shouldn't have test status anymore.

It's now midway through session two and the South Africans are still batting. Fair enough when they're 1-0 up in a 2 match series, I think they're prioritising the series win over this match, and even 4 sessions (less maybe 20 overs due to bad light) should be enough, but it's getting close to the point where the Indians will feel confident about the draw.

Before the start of the 2nd innings (as I write this he’s 29*) he’d scored 1218 runs at 35.00
Take away his 367* his average drops to 25..
Also that triple century is responsible for approx 30% of his test runs to date..

Maybe Mulder's being given a chance for 400 now. Still no declaration, lead 531. Although the Indians keep getting injuries in the field so maybe this is a masterstroke...

@Cyclops Looks like the Jaaps are happy to just win the series and if India implodes again they'll take the 2-0.

A decent chance for India to draw this test, but will they decide to push for a win if they can get through to lunch tomorrow with minimal damage?

In which case it gives SA a second string to their bow.

South Africa have really dropped the ball on this test, they should be looking to England on how to play the game.
Batting for time and pounding India into the dirt in a safe boring manner to secure the test and series, but what kind of brand is that??!!?
They should have flailed a quick 150 off 20 overs and made a game of it.

i watched the last session last night. It looks like video work has already been effective against Jaiswal. A number of very similar dismissals trying to cut far too close to his body.

I cannot see this Indian team surviving today even if the light comes to the party.

Note the size of the crowd yesterday too. Would have been a bad crowd in NZ for a test. Indians love cricket? bullshit. Indians love watching India win, everything else can get in the bin.

India 4 down already (although 1 a nightwatcher) so going to be a comfortable South African victory I suspect, but loving Sai Sudharsan's vigil - 6 off 67 at the moment. I've probably just jinxed him now, but would love to see an epic 200 ball 15

All over. What India didn't seem to learn from the hiding we gave them, is that if they make pitches so spin friendly, then players like Santner and Harmer become near unplayable. Generally they are not big turners of the ball, but their accuracy makes them difficult to get away. On a pitch like this, they become deadly as that accuracy is combined with turning it sideways which means they bowl a LOT of wicket taking deliveries.

                                        @No-Quarter Another bizarrely selected team.

What the hell is Jurel in the team for - batting at 4. He's a wicketkeeper with one modest test century.

Then Pant, who should probably be at 7 - followed by Jadeja, Reddy and Sundar, who all should ideally be at 7 as well.

Have they not got any specialist batsmen?
