We are now at a point in the season where you can look at the teams and get an idea of who they really are, and who are the contenders.

Denver and New England have the best records. Denver have lost twice to last second field goals, but have also won a lot by that same sort of margin. Our offence has been fucking terrible, but we have an elite defense, and get to the QB a heap. Should make play offs, but we're not good enough with the ball to contend.
New England are the surprise packet, new coach definitely proving he shouldn't have lost his last job. Young QB playing well. They have played some very ordinary teams so far though, a very soft draw. Will make play offs, not a contender.
That said, the Colts are next in the Conference for record. Someone has to come out of the AFC, and with the Chiefs looking very shakey (their offence is terrible), the Ravens battling, and the Bengals gone, of the normal contenders that just leaves Buffalo. And Buffalo aren't that good. Josh Allen may be enough to get them there though.

You have to think the two best teams in the league right now are Philly and surprisingly the Rams. Philly are defending champs, have a mean defense, and a run game that makes up for all Jalen Hurts' many shortcomings. They score even less than Denver, but their defense is getting better and better. Until they get knocked off, they're the team to beat.
The Rams have an elite defense, and Matt Stafford may be leading the MVP race somehow. McVay is a really good head coach as well. I think the two best teams in the league, right now, are headed for the NFCCG.

@mariner4life this is as wide open a year as I can remember. None of the contenders looks locked in - anyone can drop their shit on a day.

Going to be a super tasty finish to the season and playoffs. After all, once you're there you just need to heat up for a month and that's all she wrote!

Thanksgiving spits out more fun games.

Lions get dudded by the refs (again), and they've fallen away. Packers look solid.

Chiefs lose and their season could be over. Mahomes is still elite, but the defence is struggling. Cowboys on a tear - Lions away next Thursday will be critical ... beating Eagles Chiefs Lions in 3 weeks would be some effort.

Burrow is back. Two players I love and have jerseys for playing each other - Burrow and Henry. Fun contest, with Ravens shooting themselves in teh foot; great defence to knock a ball loose as it gets carried into the endzone. The touchback rule is one of the harshest in sport

            Holy shit, another massive upset.

Who's going to pick an SB champ? Not me - this could go anywhere in the enxt two months. What a comp.

Pointy end for college too. Some juicy matchups next weekend in the conference championship games.

Big 10 - Ohio State #1 v Indiana #2- The Buckeyes have such a rich tradition and the Hoosiers will be playing their first Big 10 chip game. Botha come into the final undefeated. The Buckeye defense is next level and will have to be on song against a high powered Indiana offence. Ohio Stare by a TD.

SEC - Alabama #10 v Georgia #4 - always billed as one of the biggest football games every year along side the SB, and two old foes will go at it again. I’m picking Georgia by less then a TD

Big 12 - Texas Tech #5 v BYU #12 - the Red Raiders offense will trouble the Cougars defense. The big question will be Bear Bachmeier and if he can get the BYU offence humming. It’s been pretty good other than 3 weeks ago against Texas Tech! BYU in an upset.

ACC - Virginia #18 v Duke - a real surprise packet this season has been Duke. I watched them early in the season and I thought they were a bit up and down, but a solid win against UNC and an out of the bag win against Clemson. Virginia are tough and I expect them to win by 10+

@ACT-Crusader with a 12 team playoff it does take the lustre off of these championship games.

                  the season just keeps delivering.

Do a lot of fans like it? no. Because there are an awful lot of fans who say they hate dynasties, but will also completely write off a season if the biggest names from the last 5 years aren't the absolute centre piece.

Couple of top teams lost this weekend, so somehow the Bears are now the 1 seed in the NFC.
The Patriots play today, but Denver has joined them as a 10-win team built almost entirely around a defence and 4th quarters.

The Chiefs are surely fucked now. The Bengals with Burrow back will now set about wrecking other teams' seasons. The Ravens lead their division with a 6-6 record and don't appear to be a threat. The only really annoying thing is, just as we get rid of all the usual teams, the fucking Patriots come back.

The Eagles still lead their division, but they don't look great, and the Cowboys are catching them fast. The NFC North and the NFC West are complete shitfights.

Defence is right on top this year. No team averaging over 30 points. A bunch of teams giving up 20 or less.

                  I have no bold predictions

Leicester Cities don't exist in the NFL. Even though there are still horror shows like the jets and the browns and the panthers that's down to good old fashioned incompetence not structural imbalances like in the EPL.

The current salary cap is actually incredibly close to man cities total salary costs, so even the worst team in the league is spending the same as man city for those results.

Yeah, I was trying to think of an NFL Leicester City, but there isn't one.
There are some shit shows tho; Jets/Browns/Titans, and I would have said Panthers, but not anymore.
The interesting thing is why the shit shows are so shit; everything being equal, so to to speak.

The Jets are more of a Nottingham Forest - occasional bouts of good quality totally undermined by incompetent ownership.

If anything, the Jets are at an advantage relative to the rest of the league because they get softer schedules and earlier draft picks. Woody just finds ways to screw it all up.

                                      Yes, but they still matter.

There is one more conference champ to make the CFP. The highest ranking Group of Five winner.
9 conferences are in play, 10 next year when the Pacific conference is back in business.
The five highest ranking champs make it.

While I dont have a problem with the conference champs bias in the CFP, it does mean some good teams miss out.
Under the current system, teams ranked 13 to 16 are always going to be good teams, better than a couple of teams who got in by the championship route (the likes of Virginia/Duke).
An expansion to a 16 team CFP would take care of that.
From 17 down the form does start to fall away.

The other thing that some have difficulty getting their heads around is that while the non-playing teams this weekend have their order (but not position) on the rankings locked-in, this is not the case with the teams playing the finals.
A good, or bad, performance in the final can change their position in the rankings.
BYU need to be very careful, and even Alabama, if they get absolutely snotted.

I think we'll see a 2016 Leicester City style winner in this year's Super Bowl.

who would be consider a team that fits this comparison that is in contention? The Bears?

@mariner4life Probably would have been the Bears. But I couldn't predict a winner right now.

Most unpredictable season I can recall.

The other big brouhaha in College football this week was the Lane Kiffen couching embroglio.

Switched from Ole Miss to LSU, 91 mil over seven years, plus bonuses.
                                          With some interesting clauses.
If he wins the CFP, he must then be assured of being the highest paid College coach.
If Ole Miss wins the CFP this year, LSU must pay his Ole Miss win bonus.

Ole Miss refused to let him coach the team thru the play-offs, Kiffen wanted to.
With no real player contracts in College, Ole Miss are scared LSU will clean them out.
                                          Same with the Assistant coaches.

Had an immediate police escort out of town, for him, and his family!
