back to the pool games, Tonga Canada in Whangarei in 2011 was my personally most enjoyable game of the tournament. Really had something riding on it, two very contrasting styles of play and Canada just got up to win. Cracking day out at Okara Park, and hordes of Tongan supporters as usual.

IT meant something. Can't see the pools at the moment doing the same thing - two top sides thump everyone else and move on.

well we've never been beaten in a world cup game in Australia, so I reckon we'll win our pool, beat Italy in the R16, Australia in QF, Argentina in the SF and then one of the also rans in the final.

    Cough. Cough. 1987. Cough.

no one counts 1987 for anything, that wasn't a real world cup, more like a warm up, no one even remembers who won

Yeah, that's probably why they didn't stage a second world cup until 2011.

For most fans a 2-year window is necessary to organise travel, accommodation and logistics

    And raising the cash

You don’t have to wait for the draw to be made before you plan and save.

If the FIFA World Cup is drawn 7 months out from the start then there’s no excuse for the RWC to not be done in December 2026.
The FIFA World Cup is 5-10 times bigger than the RWC.

But you don’t want to be buying a ticket to Sydney if your team ends up being in Perth

I get that, but what I don’t get is that the FIFA world cup is about 8 months away, and it’s being staged across Canada, the states, and Mexico, with about 10 times more fans travelling, and the draw hasn’t been done yet. (I think it’s actually tomorrow).

    Riddle me that…

Easier to get around? (more flights, trains, more cities closer together)

    Don't know.

Just know the typical UK rugby fan.

Lots travel with their clubs. Big groups.

Someone should do a retrospective series of articles on their personal memories of the best games, upsets and other special games, throughout the history of the RWC and republish it here on The Fern in the lead up to the next world cup (looking forward to writing about the Ireland QF).

screw that, the Aus Ireland game in 2011 was epic. Dominion Road shut down with people all over the place - it was carnage in a good way. And then they got up and beat Australia! Awesome

But the 87 RWC set them on a run that went right thru until they got fucked-up by the Aussies at the next World Cup.

We largely fucked ourselves with the co-coaches debacle!

Ah, no, pretty sure there is a fair distance between Vancouver and Mexico City.

I just googled it, 4,789 km

It's odd to me when people bring out the argument that World Rugby need two years to plan everything. As mentioned, FIFA can do it in half that time so surely World Rugby can, especially with the difference in scale.

Perhaps the argument is that FIFA knows every game sells out many times over so they don’ t need to give a toss about travelling fans. (I have no idea if the soccer pool games sell out though)

    Definitely.

France/Tonga in 2011. Japan pops up multiple times. Samoa/Wales going back further.

A personal favourite is Uruguay / Fiji in 2019. Their captain's interview afterwards was epic.

I reckon that's a consideration but another one would be recovery. You can fairly easily play three games of soccer in a week (ish) but rugby need a much longer turnaround.

when do they do the venues ?

At the last world cup in Aus 2003 , Allblacks played all their pool games and quarter final in Melbourne , I was stoked ,

Until the semi of course .

That's not quite accurate. They played their opening pool game vs Italy, a pool game vs Canada and a quarter final in Melbourne

But they also played a pool game in Sydney vs Wales and in Brisbane vs Tonga.

That’s right, memory fade , but they were based here and training here , I remember taking my sons to watch them train , walking in a gate and security rushing over and telling us no spectators

Happened for all RWC with 5 team pools.

Pretty sure after complaints in 2011 by the minnows the Tier One teams had to have similar draws thereafter.

Four team pools this time means no bye and no three games per week.

Don't know how they maintain the interest through the week though.

Or even spread games across a weekend?

    12 games per week.

Say two on a Friday, e g., 2nd kick off say 9pm (AEDT in Perth)
Perth can't have a game everyday, so say 4 games on a Saturday and on Sunday. That's 10.

One on a Thursday and one other ...
As I say, I'd suggest need some mid week games to maintain interest.

This RWC will last one less week than in 2023 (6 weeks but 7 weekends). A minimum of 5 days between games for teams.

Partly as a replacement for SA, as they were in the bad boys corner at the time.

Bad boys? What did they do? Something heinous, like eye gouging?

Anyone have an idea on how strong Argentina will be? Like current form, or have some ageing players? Their coaching team looks strong to me but I suspect player depth will be a factor.
