50 overs in 2 sessions is a bit shit, even with a spinner bowling.

238/5 and Australia getting on top now. Khawaja and Carey have done most of the damage.

Can't believe The Waj didn't make a hundred - what was his scriptwriter up to? Gone to the bar for a beer?!!!

And as I type, Tongue bowls Inglis. Desperately needed wicket. They've got to mop up the tail tonight and quickly.

Given the firepower at Oz' disposal 300 will likely be a challenging score.

Quite un-Australian like today - yet another wicket gifted more than earned.

I suspect 300 will be tough as well on this pitch even with wickets that were given away

That was a terrible shot by Carey after he and Starc were just milking the wayward Jacks for 4 singles an over. The pitch looks quite slow and "spongy" - a dangerous pitch to drive on if it's not quite full enough. But a relatively benign wicket to drop anchor and hit the bad balls.

Snicko isn't used for DRS - except in Australia. Ultraedge has taken over and runs some sort of frequency filter over the waveform to isolate snick sounds. Cricket Australia don't care and want to use Snicko, which is inferior technology.

All this I picked up from online, sounds reasonable, but fucked if I know if it's true or not. Using a wave pass filter seems fairly basic - but then so does syncing audio and video. It's a colossal fuckup for me. Also, given how people get given out elsewhere (including in earlier tests) the optics are terrible.

England will need someone to go big here, and not to fuck up against Starc (and probably Lyon). So, basically another Aus win.

Far too thick for that carry on.

But surely Brook is due. Certainly can't bank on the others ( excluding Root ) who are still a bit bazballish when things get tough without the generational talent Brook has.

@MN5 hah, I should have said 'bush lawyer' or 'sovereign citizen'. Just slippery generally ... used car salesman? Real estate agent? Insurance salesman? 😃

But yes I agree. Brook is class, can see him getting his eye in and scoring big - probably after the Ashes are lost.

Yeah it would be great for the series if he could get a massive score that meant something, ie kept the series alive. But that English top order is flakey as fuck.

In case you can't tell I'm a fan, that 123 off 115 against NZ at the Basin convinced me. Definitely leading the way as part of the new fab four.

Starc has it in him to frustrate the Poms today, they'll want to get him quick but he's handy in these situations.

    the new fab four.

speaking of which, Cameron Green hasn't kicked on yet. 33 avg batting, 37 bowling. That's a bit 'oof' for batting in the top 6.

Massive talent but doesn't seem to have put it out there quite yet. Still, he's got paid, so there's that - it wrecked Kyle, maybe it'll get in his head too? NFL see that, where players can drop off once the big payout arrives.

Yeah those "part rounder" stats. Would need to improve the bowling side of things massively.

But he was never part of the new fab four.....

@MN5 yeah sorry didn't mean to imply Green was part of the fab 4.

Ravindra though? I mean I like him, but he's no Kane dubya.

Agreed. He could be a Rossco Taylor though.

That Marty Crowe sure knew his Cricket when he first mentioned them. Outstanding call.

That snicko cock-up is a bit of a shocker.

They're saying the operator must have loaded audio from the wrong stump mike. If that's the case - I would have thought the spike would have been after the nick rather than before - because wouldn't the sound have to travel the length of the pitch before it created the spike?
