I hadn't heard that story before. That's a great line..

Edit: Looked it up and Gavaskar scored a double ton in that innings! Got the last laugh there.

I was doing scoreboard at the Basin when I was at college and got Gavaskars autograph ( he was there as a commentator )

tiny guy, I could never believe he took on the best of the Windies back in the day but what a record. One of the best openers of all time.

I wasn't alive in the 80s, but out of all of the guys that I saw on replays and what not, he was the best for me from that era. He'd get into position better than anyone else and had some of the quickest footwork you'd see.

Maybe that's why Michael Holding hated him so much.

Most legendary batsmen are small to medium sized guys. The only big guys I can think of are Matthew Hayden and Jaques Kallis.

Back on topic. Ajaz Patel hasn't taken a test wicket in NZ. Only three tests mind you but still, hopefully the selectors know what they're doing.

Two tests on at the same time is always fun and a good excuse to do even less work at this time of year.

    IMG_6395.jpeg

My XI ( who I think they'll choose, not who I would pick )

    Latham
    Conway
    KW
    Ravindra
    Mitchell
    Blundell
    Phillips
    Foulkes
    Duffy
    Rae
    Patel

Blundell walks straight back in which I don't agree with.

I don't think they'll pick Patel for the squad and not play him.

Possibly a bit risky going in with just three quicks.

Cricinfo has Phillips and Bracewell bracketed. Phillips didn't really take his chance last go but has more upside, I think he'll get another go. On Instagram he also bench pressed a ridiculous 185kg which is more than most Rugby players can manage.

Windies should roll over pretty quick at the end of a long tour.

Does that enhance his ability to hurl the ball in with pinpoint accuracy at breakneck speed from the wide long on boundary when there is a possibility of a runout?

With that sort of strength I'd assume every forward defensive nudge should go for six or at least four.

I am confused. Latham said one change from the last test, Patel for Tickner. Yet TV just listed Blundel playing, that would mean two changes wouldn't it?

The commentators have mentioned Blundell playing again, so I am guessing Latham forgot about him.

Would appear to be the case.

NZ won the toss and batting. Blundell needs runs as well as tidy keeping cos Hay looked to the manor born.

Pretty good start so far, slow first 5 or so overs but looks like they are settling in nicely

Fuck me as I type this Conway has a streaky shot through the slips for 4

    Both on 21 from 42.

Then Conway cracks a 4, through to drinks. 47/0.

A little bit of streaky running, too close for comfort on the first morning of a test.

From a NZ perspective, couldn’t ask for more in the opening session.

Agreed awesome start from NZ, but pathetic bowling given the ball movement to give us time to settle

50 for Conway and 6000 runs as an opener for Tom Latham.

John Wright second with 5260 and Glenn Turner way back in third with 2828.

Fair to say its not an area of the game NZ has had a lot of stars.

These two going ball for ball. Both faced 103, Latham 50, Conway 76.

The latter in particular looking brilliant, really nice to see after the issues he's had of late.

Test average up over 40 now too, 40.75. Seperates the good from the very good.

100 for Conway. Lovely drive down the ground for four.

Great to see him get it, his spot in the team was in real jeopardy not long ago. Looks to have fixed the flaws in his game and has played with real authority.

Latham going good at the other end on 75. NZ 178/0.

These two are about half way to the highest ever opening partnership vs the Windies........they may as well have a crack.

    https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/new-zealand-tour-of-west-indies-1971-72-62104/west-indies-vs-new-zealand-4th-test-63082/full-scorecard

Check out those strike rates !!! Glenn "Bazball" Turner had the highest with 34 of the five guys who batted......

Currently fifth best opening stand about 15 runs from next target, then a few more at 20 runs apart approaching, still a long way off that Turner one though

Latham with the ton now too, doesn't get any better than that. WI will have one foot on the plane but their bowling lineup is very good, they rolled the Aussies a few times, so good to see these two score runs against a decent attack.

Yeah they used up all their fight and competitiveness in the drawn match I feel. They're going through the motions now.

Great that Latham got a much deserved ton too.
