Chiefs 2026

No one can say that Gibbes isn't being honest with his comments about Jacomb leaving after this season.
Probably not delivered in the smartest way. If I was Jacomb or people close to him I'd be pissed off.
*“My goal is to make him regret his decision every day,” he said. “That he loves the Chiefs, he loves the environment, he’s getting awesome coaching.
“If I can put him in doubt over his decision – because we rate him, we really like where he’s at with his game, I really like the person – I want to put positive pressure on him, that way.”*
It is quite a pointed go at a guy still in his playing group. Who has, whether Gibbes likes it or not, made a decision for his future.
The line about positive pressure seems weird. Jacomb is under contract for 27&28. Just like how the Chiefs didn't release him to us. We won't back our because of coach Jono's 'positive' pressure.
There could have been a much better way of explaining it without being clearly critical of a member of his playing group.
The narrative was clearly negative and reflected frustration. A reporter would have heard that as a banger of a quote.
A more neutral one would have been something like.
"It was disappointing last year to learn Josh will be moving on.
"We have invested in him a lot and he has been with us since his time in the U20s side.
"Our goal this year is to ensure he has fond memories of his last year with us. You never know what might happen in the future."

@SouthernMann ????? How do you make that conclusion? I would have thought that making him happy and feeling valued was the best way to go. And I hope most Chiefs fans feel that way.

Yeah I would argue that Gibbe's comments are actually considerably more positive than your alternative suggestion @southernmann.

I eead it as he is wanting to out pressure on him to stay to the point of withdrawing himself from a future contract.
We all read things differently.

@southernmann funny and interesting take from that article. doubly so considering you were wanting him to break his contract with the chiefs

Which the Chiefs refused. Partly why I find it interesting Gibbes wants to put 'postive pressure' on him. Pressure generally creates an outcome. What is the outcome Gibbes is seeking?

@SouthernMann yeah think you might be stacking up that mountain out of this molehill eh. All pretty innocuous.

he is wanting Josh to head to the highlanders knowing what he is missing out on. I really think you are over blowing this, you have a contract he is going.
the alternative is for Josh to sit in stand and chiefs develop TCS@ploughboy said in Chiefs 2026:

the alternative is for Josh to sit in stand and chiefs develop TCSI have no issue with the mechanics of the situation and what will play out.
It is if I was saying something publicly about someone deprting an organisation I wouldn't use the terms pressure or regret. I'm just an anonymous hack though, not a media trained rugby coach.
Good luck to Jacomb this year. I hope he finishes the year the second highest points scorer in Super, makes the All Blacks and leads the Chiefs to a two loss season.

'We have invested in him a lot' would sound like sour grapes to me, whereas, 'We want him to regret his decision every day' sounds a bit more playful, acknowledging he's off but making sure it's a struggle to leave at the end of the season. But yes just different interpretations.

An opportune time for Jacomb to step up against his soon-to-be team in Rd 2. The 50:22 was his highlight, but we didn't see him put players into space. And like Perofeta, goal-kicking can be erratic.

Yeah, agree. Was not his finest game.
Next week will be a big clash. Millar will be amping up too. Going against the man his franchise actively sought out to replace him. Because they decided he was not good enough. Plenty for him to prove against Jacomb.
Just one last thing on the terms 'investment' v regret.
Investment is tangible. It isn't just money it is time, personal development, rugby knowledge etc. It is all measurable. It is a statement of fact.
While regret is of course, an emotion and feeling. Saying you want the player to feel regret is saying you want them to feel sad/disappointed when leaving. It is something that is not measurable.
There is also an easy media article to follow up with Jacomb after the season or next year. Gibbes said in February he hoped you regretted leave. Did you regret leaving? Same with if he does media during the season? Has this season made tou regret your decision?
Anyway, said my piece on the matter!

Any talk of player or coach movement at chiefs ? Talk that Clayton will bring a forwards coach over for his 2nd year Graham Dewes name was mentioned
Similarly Munster are in the market for a THP and back 3 player
