Have you seen Junior's grades? Guilty Pleasure Time.

I intensely, almost pathelogically, despise Van Halen. And yet, when I hear either of two songs by them (as I did on the radio yesterday), I cannot help but crank it right up. Those two irresistible VH tunes are:

and
Panama ain't too terrible, either.

First time I caught SP they were obscure unknowns - Gish had been released maybe a month but couldn't be found in stores - nobody in the crowd knew them --- Corgan with long hair, wearing pyjamas and playing a guitar with planets on it -- looked like a prototype space-cadet . . . until a girl threw a quarter at his face and he showed some serious attitude picking it up and flinging it right back at her and warning her if she tried it again he'd come down and kick her ass. Great stuff!

If you are a big fan, definitely try picking up a rental on that new (awesome) Rush documentary - Corgan's testimonials are the most confessional and passionate. He tells a moving story about his difficult teenage years where he sat his mother down and made her listen to "Entre Nous" (from "Permanent Waves") telling her that if she really wanted to know about their mother-son relationship, then she needed to listen to that song with him.
I saw the Smashing Pumpkins when the came here in 2008. It was one of the most disappointing concerts I've ever been to. Their set list was crap, and they really didn't seem that in to it. However, Queens of the Stone Age opened for them, and they were fantastic. (setlist FYI)

Had my tunes on shuffle, and a live version of Moon Dance by Van Morrison came up, rather than skip, I let it play. He's such a great musician.

'Santa' got me a ticket to the Stone Temple Pilots show in Auckland this March, I'm very excited about that.
Her music is used on TV commercials to sell cars, and my friends housewives (who are less into music and more into Oprah and Martha Stewart) own & play her CD ... so I'd reckon she's already kinda big. Popping up on all sorts of year-end lists.

We'll shucks us backwater folks in New Zulland must be a little behind the times. My only hope is that she still releases her album in 8 track....

Is that the criterion for being "big"? House wives own your CD?

For me, yeah, household name-recognition with my friends' housewives equals smash-hit, 'cos by-and-large those housewives don't follow music. (Then again, the housewives are also humming Arcade Fire this season, so I guess that confirms them as officially huge now, too.) Rare to go without a tv commercial break up here the past few months and miss the regular Chevrolet spots w/ Monae's "Tightrope" in constant rotation.

I was at that show in Wellington, I agree with everything you said. My wife used to quite like the Smashing Pumpkins, now she avoids listening to them.

I was into the Queens of the Stone Age a while ago, and was disappointed that they started on time (7pm) while we were waiting in a queue to get in.

[Edit]
Although looking at that setlist we only missed half of the first song. Billy Corgan also made the crowd sing happy birthday, then wasn't happy with us, so made us sing again. If we had known that he was done for the night I doubt anyone would have bothered.

I saw them both at the V Festival on the same tour. Festival sets are obviously shorter, but i thought the Pumpkins were pretty good. Slightly shorter version of that list, Porcelina and Hummer were excellent inclusions i thought. It does help that i liked their latest album i guess. QOTSA were fucking brilliant that night though.

The Pumpkins' show at the Supertop in '96 ranks as the second best concert of my life. Long, and so so good.
