I bet he held off so that the jokes wouldn't start.

Because, boy, I'm really struggling to hold back at the moment...

in all seriousness, this isn't great for him at all. I can see how eye issues could be a show stopped. Hopefully he can get some clarity from the surgeon (or their pupil) and look to get back to the crease soon.

Very nice to win and to see new boys de Grandhomme and Raval do well.

I'm especially pleased about Raval, in that he's been quite convincing in the spot that is the biggest problem. If you'd told me one of our openers would make 10 runs in the test and the other would make 91 and once out I would have bet heavily on Latham being the one who did well.

CdG, well, I doubt he'll end his test career with better bowling figures, but for a guy who probably won't play too many tests, he's got something to tell the grandkids and for now the allrounder's slot is his.

Rossco's eye problems are a bit of a worry - as is his age. I just looked him up on Cricinfo and didn't realise he's not far short of 33. That's also a bit of a concern when you figure that fixtures like Fleming, Astle and McCullum all finished their test careers before their 35th birthdays (I think).

@Chris-B. Raval also got himself a record with 4 catches on debut. The fourth catch was a beauty too.

I wonder if Santner will be back for Hamilton? That might be the only change (for Astle), assuming Taylor's eye is OK.

Lets say Taylor doesn't play, who gets next crack?

Contenders off the top of my head would be

    Guptill
    Young
    Brownlie

I'm sure there are a couple more in the mix, but I'm struggling to think of them right now.

I really rate Brownlie but it wouldn't be bad to give Guptill a chance. No Taylor makes our batting line up look weak. At least Misbah is out (although sad that it is for personal reasons).

Young should be there but hasn't helped his chances in domestic cricket. Brownlie has always had massive problems against spin and is getting on a bit so I wouldn't be suprised to see Guptill back in the middle order. Maybe Neesham or Anderson to come back in?

That's a very pleasing start to the summer of cricket. Much better than our friends across the ditch (just to take a cheap dig at them while they're down).

Raval took his chance and now has a test average of 91 which is not too shabby. He's on track to be talked about in the hushed tones that people speak of Bradman...

Good to see Kane get some time in the middle to kick start his summer, looking for him to pile it on and keep that average climbing.

Southee did enough to keep his spot, though I personally would still prefer Henry but no doubt Hess and co will stick with him on the back of a few wickets. He did improve as the game wore on so hopefully he takes some confidence out of that.

CDGH the story of the match, 6-for and a handy 30 odd means he keeps his place in the team. If he can chip in with a few wickets and some handy 40s and 50s then he'll add some value to the side. Reasonably big if still though, but well played on his debut, he can be very proud.

I am a happy chalpy today - All Blacks, Wallabies (keeps the wife happy) and the Black Caps get the job done. Good times.

'The hushed tones one night ordinarily reserve for Raval.....'

Well I have heard worse... .fuck it, is there space on the bandwagon for me too?

Christchurch most seam-friendly pitch I have played on - Azhar

Well played Christchurch. More of the same please Hamilton.

Neesh out, Santner back in. Awaiting results of an eye scan for Rosco - eek. Brownlie will come in as cover if he is out.

So only change for next test will be Santner for Astle I guess, which is a little harsh on Astle.

Is it arrogant to assume a 2-0 victory to the BCs ? Pakistan hasn't played outstandingly well in NZ since the two Ws retired and NZ are a different team at home.....I say this all despite losing the last five tests too.

Well phase one is complete although I wouldn't in a million years have picked the guys who played well for the BCs.

The Pakistan top order have some serious class though it must be said. Surely big runs are due from at least one of them.

They've elevated Bracewell into the side according to the report on the wireless

@canefan Bracewell into the squad, but Henry should replace Boult.

The weather in Hamilton has been good this week but some showers are forecast tomorrow and over the weekend. There's a cricket test scheduled afterall.

Yip tough on Astle but that is how it goes.

Henry should definitely play ahead of Bracewell. If Scott Kuggeleijn did not have a rape trial over his head I imagine he would probably have got the call up.

@SammyC For you pig islanders down south, light rain was falling but it's stopped now. Very overcast though so I'd be surprised if the test starts on time.

10.10am And it's drizzling in Hamilton, says Andrew Fernando.

Boooooo, this was meant to distract me from doing any work today.
