... while perhaps simultaneously admitting that the disconnect between First Class cricket and the National Team is fucking huge.

      @NTA no, they really aren't.

The outcome of this next test will be very interesting. If Aus win, how will it be viewed? But even more interesting, what if they lose another one?

Either a vindication of giving youth a chance, or evidence that you need more first class experience...

The parallels between Aus and NZ cricket at the moment are huge

        • the gulf between domestic cricket and test cricket
        • the amateurs in charge of the administration
        • the batting lineup being propped up by two world class players in amongst a bunch of below par players
        • a couple of handy bowlers (who are often injured) that can potentially get you over the line from time to time, so long as your two good batsmen go big
        • a patch of good cricket to raise the expectations followed by a spectacular collapse to send them crashing down again
        • praying for rain at the mid point of most test matches
        • attacking the oppositon for being mean to try and deflect from your own teams sub par performance (see CWC final 2015)

This is all par for the course for Black Caps fans, we are well practised in all of this, but I can understand @NTA and co struggling to come to terms with this a bit. They've had a golden run that stretches back beyond the memory capacity of most people.

Day night test has just kicked off with Faf and Paf winning the toss and having a bat.

and the key to taking early wickets when you lost the toss is to not overstep

Starc to Cook, 1 no ball, plumb in front. Cook misses a straight one. And Starc strikes early. Doesn't bother reviewing. Is it a no-ball though? Looks like Starc has just overstepped. Full and straight, swinging back in. Cook is beaten for pace and is struck on the pads in front of middle and leg. Dead in front. A life for Cook. Was done in completely

Even first session. Aus with 3 wickets, Saffers getting themselves through to 90.

and straight back to advantage Aus as Starc gets his 2nd. 95/4

Bavuma goes and it's 5 for 100 odd, Aus on top. However if they roll them too quickly then there is the risk of facing the new (pink) ball under lights for 20+ overs. And if the NZ-Aus test was anything to go by it'll do plenty.

Bird in to the wickets and SA 5 down now for only 117.

What an innings from Faf. And a very savvy declaration 9 down to give his bowlers 12 overs at the Aussies under lights. Advantage SA.

He looked solid for such a young bloke, handled himself really well.

I back the decision to declare but Aus surviving that period has nullified that, and can start fresh under the sun today. Test evenly balanced again.

Yeah bit of swing around in the afternoon perhaps, but if we can stay solid we might even have a lead.

Warner going well. Goes off for treatment last night, gets caught out by Faf, and can't open. Then "plays his natural game" and gets out for fuck all

                                41/2.

                                Khawaja playing solid

Did you see the catch to get Renshaw? Jeez that was close. A tad unlucky but looked like Elgar had enough under it to back up the umpire's instinct.

Yeah he'd pretty much fucked it and the umps might have been tempted to say "not out" and then let the video evidence back them up.

As it was, the Saffers were confident, the belief was "out" and they get the reward. Same as Philander yesterday - given out, no hotspot, but enough snicko to suggest its good.

I don't mind the "overwhelming evidence" for the technology.

Aussies got a longer tail than normal this game? Seems quite weak from 9 down.

I do like the night session bringing the bowlers back in at the end of the day, an extra dimension. Apart from when it down-troued us last year, then I didn't like it.

9 through 11 tend to be bowlers i.e. the tail.

Not sure whether I've misunderstood you there? 🙂
