I suppose they put a tennis court on the prime inland site? And sold the 'crappy' beachfront sections to the poor people in the 20's?

    Early Settlement at Mount Maunganui

    Early Settlement at Mount Maunganui

Mt. Maunganui, Tauranga (No. 17) Postcard image from collection of Justine Neal The earliest settlers of the narrow spit of land where ...

"In 1864 the first pilot house was built on the slopes of Mauao with a replacement cottage being built in 1874. Although it was a favourite spot for picnics and outings for the Tauranga settlers, permanent settlement of the area started slowly with people from Tauranga and Rotorua buying land and building holiday baches near the foot of Mauao on the sandhills. Many of these people later became residents."

They could have chosen anywhere... but they chose the sand hills.... on the beach...

    also

"The Adams Cottage in Adams Avenue is the oldest building in Mount Maunganui. Although built as a bach or holiday home for John Cuthbert Adams it is a similar style of many pioneer cottages, having a gable ended simple design in what is known as ‘carpenter gothic’ style. Adams built it as a bach in 1906 when his family lived in Fifth Avenue at Taipororo. It was said that his daughters could row to the bach faster than he could drive around Welcome Bay to the Mount, the only route at that time.
The cottage is near the foreshore at Pilot Bay and originally had a simple plan."

@jegga That's great. I don't really LOL but did he actually say 6HP? I really love my cars but mostly drive a beaten up old hilux ute, which is akin to his final comment of "this thing is just fucking awful".

@NTA I secretly love it of course, and people actually smile at me and let me into queues when I drive it. They don't do that when I am in the RS4, funny that...The hilux also looks like the end result of the Top gear guys trying to destroy one, and failing. Only 180,000k's as well, so hopefully get another 300,000 out of it like my Hilux surf.

Its only a 200cc two stroke so 6hp is apparently what it puts out . If you love cars have you ever checked out this site?http://ateupwithmotor.com/ Be warned its one of those black hole sites that you can click on and then wonder where the last three hours went.

I've had two hiluxes and loved them both, I want to get another one as a project with my son. My brother has two-the model from the first crumpy ads with a surf v6 and a stout he wants to put an alloy v8 in. I'd never heard of a stout till he dragged the thing out of a farmers shed. It wont be winning any beauty contests, heres a restored one.

Bloody hell. I bought a 190cc lawn mower 2 days ago. Subaru powered and bloody good.
I'm at risk of sounding like Clarkson, but there is no substitute for power.

I really don't want to say this, but that Stout is, well... "cute". Definitely looks like it needs a V8. Not a real man's diesel hilux of course. You should definitely educate your son on the joys of shitbox hilux ownership.

It's got that so ugly it's cool thing going on I agree . I prefer it to the other cars he was obsessed with-bloody Volkswagens, he's had about 30 and a kharman ghia. He restores kombis and beetles , I borrowed a kombi when my ute was out of action and bloody hell it's like joining a secret club. When you drive around people flash their lights and wave at you, people come up and chat to you out of the blue at gas stations . I think the most bizarre was this guy that followed me home and told me how cool my kombi was and asked if I wanted to join the local VW owners club, he wasn't too pleased when I said " I'm not one of you mate, I only borrowed it".

Btw is a hilux that much better than a surf? Surfs are way cheaper.

This (and I still own a surf).

As for the VW thing Jegga
"When you drive around people flash their lights and wave at you, people come up and chat to you out of the blue at gas stations "

It's either pity or anger, take your pick. Neither is good but that's what you get for driving one - borrowed or not. Wife has a Golf GTi but I don't talk about it.
