Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

The boy and a group of his friends organised a Sunday afternoon get together to see this, and I decided to tag along. On the condition they all sit in another area of the cinema.

The first point to make is the CGI is top-notch, as you'd expect for anything in the Potter universe.

The story was fucking slow to start with though, and (somewhat annoyingly) had that teenage movie thing of wrapping everything up nicely with a ribbon at the end.

Redmayne makes a great stumbling nerd and Dan Fogler is great as the Muggle ("NoMaj" in US wizarding talk) that stumbles into everything.

The difference in relationship between Wizard and non-Wizard in the USA is a significant point in the movie; its almost got a facist feel to parts of it.

    3.5 broomsticks out of 5.

    ARQ

A Netflix production, basically set in the same house for the majority of it, where a couple of people are stuck in a time loop against four threats.

Unfolds in an interesting fashion as the main protagonist, and then others in the piece, start remembering what happened in the previous iteration.

Decent acting and a solid plot.

@NTA That reminds me of a movie I watched again recently; Coherence.

Four doppelgängers out of five alternate universes.

@Catogrande I really liked The Martian. I watched it on a plane, and we fucking landed in the middle of the rescue scene, and i sat there, in my seat, watching well after everyone was off, so i could see the end.

Watched it again last night as well, i think it's great.

@NTA I saw that last week with the mrs it didn't do much for me, I don't think I was its target audience . The significance of the real identity of the character at the end was lost on me too, was that a Harry Potter thing?

I'm like you: not exactly sure. Obviously someone was going to be that guy because the whole opening sequence was covered in Wizarding newspapers that reported some badass had been fucking shit up. And given the haircut, that was pretty obvious too.

Another question is: did he just replace the existing Graves in the Murican Wizard HQ or what?

He was a dark wizard who was important to the plot of the 7th book. He was a friend and collaborator with Dumbledore who were wizard supremacists. Eventually Dumbledore defeated him in a duel which will presumably be the 5th movie in this series. When Dumbledore defeated him, he took the elder wand which Voldermort sought.

In the past few weeks I have seen Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival and Hell or High Water. All three of those movies are stellar. All five stars IMO.

Saw arrival too and thought it was great, will be seeing the other two . Would hell or high water survive the switch to the small screen? From the trailers I'm pretty certain Hacksaw ridge wouldn't.

Hacksaw Ridge is a must for the cinema. Hell or High Water it's up to you. I always prefer to watch them in the cinema but it would still be good on the small screen.

@mariner4life Don't get me wrong it was well made and for the best, well acted. It was just too slow for me. Still if we all liked the same stuff we'd all be chasing after the same woman. Just as well really.

    The Big Short

Fuck what a great movie. Sure, scary as fuck that the world's biggest financial systems are run with the same conscience as a bunch of three-year-olds in charge of a pile of chocolate. And that its happening again.

But really interesting look at the way things went down.

Great acting. Great fourth wall breaks. Great humour despite the utter shitfight it must have seemed at the time.

    5 out of 5 CDOs

@NTA Haven't seen the film Nick but concur with your view. Scary indeed but not in the least surprising. The only thing that shouts loud and long is money. Heard some shit the other day about loans being collateralised, repackaged and sold as "investments".

    Too soon.

@Catogrande there was a quote at the end of the film about something called a "bespoke tranche opportunity" which was basically the same product as what escalated the mess.

What I love is that there are still people out there who blame government interference on housing policy for the utter fucking greed of financial institutions and the culture they promote.

Some great quotes from the movie, from what little I understand of the financial market - it was pretty good at explaining that in (mostly) layman's terms:

The Big Short (2015) - Quotes - IMDb

The Big Short (2015) - Quotes - IMDb

The Big Short: Directed by Adam McKay. With Ryan Gosling, Rudy Eisenzopf, Casey Groves, Charlie Talbert. In 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the United States mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is.

Mark Baum: [of Collateralized Debt Obligation funds] So mortgage bonds are dog shit. CDOs are dog shit wrapped in cat shit.

    An excellent point.

Loved the bit at the end of her explanation where she looks down the camera, waves her hand and says "fuck off"

Watched Home Alone 1 with the boy, don't think I've seen him laugh so much at a movie before. He was pissing himself when Kevin was fucking up the bad guys. Movie holds up well given how old it is now.

@No-Quarter CF Jnr loves that film, it is a classic. John Candy makes his cameo as well but it is Culkin Pesce and the guy that plays Marv that are the most fun. He loves #2 as well
