Who gives a shit about Piutau? For whatever reason he chose to cash in instead of having any sort of decent All Black career. Not the sort of guy i want playing for the ABs. Would rather guys who are prepared to stay and fight for a jersey even if it costs them millions.
Evans is in the same basket. Could have played 50 tests with all the injuries Carter had after 2007 but chose the cash. He ripped it up in the NH but guys like Donald and Slade who stuck around have RWC winners medals.@pukunui said in Exodus 2017:

Imagine what could have been. We might have won the rwc and piutau would have been the longterm 14. Oh wait, we did win it and Piutau was chasing the cash anyway. -

Yep agree with you on the pack BT. But there's something oddly brittle about Ulster this season as well. Have this funny feeling they'll be fighting hard for a Euro Cup top 6 spot come the business end in May.
If Piutau has any sense, then he should head straight back to NZ. He hasn't been "cutting it up" much this season - I was astonished to see him with constant hands on hip and ambling round the pitch whilst his side were getting rogered at the RDS with his backline marking poor for a couple of soft tries.
Pienaar and van der Merwe will be gone by season with Nucifora unlikely to approve any foreign stocks unless you're wearing red and your name is Rassie. Despite the best attendance in the league, mediocrity abounds up north - they need a serious squad shift in thinking and commitment.

Ben Smith will be 31 come the Lions series, we are going to lose the Ben Smith we know and love due to age/injury sooner rather than later.
I would honestly be more worried if they bet the farm on Smith and that meant the funds weren't there for the next round of guys.
We gutted the entire 10-12-13 nexus and turned it over to career fringe players, rookies, and Barrett who had barely played 10 at test level and things were - fine. The removal of Smith and Dagg would have far less of an effect than that turnover.
Pau certainly seem to have a type of player in mind with Conrad Smith, Colin Slade and Tom Taylor already at the club.

I'd be half wary of throwing too much money at a 30 year-old outside back. They tend to find their form (speed) suddenly falling off a cliff, and then you are left with a white elephant. They should offer Ben Smith a very good contract, but no way they should match the sums reportedly being offered by Pau.

@Unco Piutau barely got a chance to start for the ABs - and when he did he crushed it. NMS has had one rookie season in black. Not a fair comparison. Id have taken Piutau over Savea on the left wing last year in a heartbeat. But yes Dagg on the wing had a great season.

NZR had been negotiating a contract with Piutau for two months and he was sent a final draft for a further 2-year contract. Piutau even signed it, but it wasn't returned to NZR. He suddenly changed his mind after receiving an offer from Ulster and surprised everyone, including NZR, by signing with them instead. If anything, NZR didn't even get a chance to fight for him.

I honestly think Piutau will look back at that decision with some regret. When he's an old fart looking back on his life I think an illustrious career in black would mean more than a bit of extra $ when he was young.

It all depends on what your priorities are at the time I suppose. Family to support/opportunities to travel & experience life vs Jersey. Everyone has their price.
NZ simply cannot compete with the coin that is on offer overseas.
I do think in years to come the likes of Piutau, Bundee Aki and Fritz Lee may be viewed as ones who "slipped through the net" -

Both were players that in NZ, cut it up at NPC level but never really hit the highlights enough at Super level. Both found that their play was considered excellent in Europe. I can't really see the alternate universe where they stayed in NZ and became ABs
